Tearing apart my 75 Q Jet today and i'm using a book since this is my first time. The carb sat a while and so I figured I would go through everything but when it came to getting those idle tubes out i'm stuck. The book said to punch the rod down 1/8th inch and cut the tip off a screw to pull the whole thing out. Ive tried heating it but its still not coming out of there. So now I figure I have to get them out but how? Can I get new ones and just drill the sucker out? If so where and which tubes do I need. I'm running a crate engine and the book said I would need to modify the tubes to get more idle control with a bigger cam.
There are two parts to the idle tube - the larger diameter, short upper part and the long, skinny tube. To get the idle tube out, I punch the smaller, long tube down with a small punch, and then pull the upper part out using a small tap, though using a screw might work too. If you need to drill the idle tubes out, you might try thecarburetorshop.com for parts such as idle tubes. Or you might get a cheap used carb from your local junkyard or carburetor shop and try your luck with those idle tubes.
Ill try a tap before I give up and drill them out. If I can get these out, is it alright for the collar not to be perfect? Trying to get them out has messed them up a little bit.
Is there just the two tubes on either side or are those another set of idle tubes just below and to the outside of the ones im trying to remove?
