1981 Corvette Daytona Restoration
I don't know if this is the right forum to put it in, but This is my father's 1981 Daytona. He bought this car back in 1984 and then in the early 90's repainted it himself and did some other "flashy" details. Work started piling up and Dad lost time for the car, so it was just sitting there and was neglected, especially after we got a Italian addition to the car stable. He then took the car to his ranch in 2003 and it has been there ever since. It runs and everything, but It needs some work to get done to it. The flashiness of the 90's isn't as in anymore, so were in the works of getting it re-done. I grew up with this car, I remember my Dad driving it to my Kindergarden graduation! My Dad and I have a big love for it! Basically Dad is giving me the creative freedom of it's restoration. Im probably going to go with a special Lamborghini Red and a Vette Black on the body and re-do the whole interior to original or modern with a navigation system and all that new fancy stuff. I just wanted to let other Vette people know about this project that were working on and that I'll be posting updates as they come along. Were getting the original wheels which were Enkei 3-Piece wheels with a chrome lip and black mesh center re-done, I'll post those up some time this week when we get them back! Hope you guys enjoy the pics.

Well, good luck with whatever you end up doing. The Daytonas are an acquired taste, I suppose. One that I have not acquired myself. If the running gear is stock (and I'm presuming it is, given the CA plates), I would imagine that the L81 is wheezing under the weight of the body mods.

This could be an interesting project. I wonder what a wide-body has morphed into for the year 2010?

First of all, welcome to the CF.
Can't say as I care for the bling wing so much, but I've been a fan of the Daytona body ever since first seeing the "civilian" version unveiled at the 1981 Eckler's Corvette Reunion (same week as the first shuttle launch, BTW). Given the $$$$$ I'd call Greenwood in a heartbeat to see if they would dust off the molds, or "settle" for their GTO body.
Be sure to post up a plenty. We'll be glad to help you spend your money.

Say what you want, I kinda like it. As far as the nostalgia goes, I probably wouldn't do much to it. The 80's are coming back in a huge way. I know this because my 11 year old daughter is coming up with all the "latest fashion" that takes me screaming back to MY high school days. Good luck with the re-do. It should be fun, especially as a father/son deal.

If I may suggest... as you will be repainting it...
While still maintaining the 80's tribute style, I would remove the wing and the 4 different crossed flags/logos.
Everyone knows it's a corvette, and the Mr.T - ish gold nameplate on the front seems a bit garrish. (well, in the countryside where I am anyways)

Thanks for the honest comments guys! Alot of the badges are gonna go and depending on how it looks it might aquire some new C6 badges or I'll throw on the old 81 Badges. I'll post up the wheels when I get them back, my wheel guys are taking longer on the rivets, because they have to be color chromed red.

I'm a fan...
Honestly, tho I'd stay true to the original Greenwood Daytona theme as for badging, wheels and removing the wing, IMHO a wild paint scheme is perfectly appropriate for it, every bit as much so as on those Warhol Bimmers. Not saying you should take styling cues from the neon ricers, but with those lines it's not exactly ever going to blend in with all the other jellybeans on the road anyway.
Under the skin, I'd mod it mechanically to make sure it's as potent as it's looks, both in cornering capacity and terminal velocity. Wouldn't want to ever be accused of being "all show and no go". Do this right and IMHO you'll have a near priceless piece of art on your hands which you can also take out and panic the occasional Porsche or Ferrari owner while pounding the pavement to the envy of everyone else.
