Thanks for adding...

Just FYI the Riks catalog shows 6" for '63-'67, 7.5 inch for '68, and 8" for 69 and up. (just sayin')

Gotcha. I'm not very well versed on the C2 and very early C3's. Thanks for correcting me. Now, I've learned something else and this time it didn't get into my wallet.

Ya... I just checked my Bruce Associates "Corvette Black Book" (1st edition 1979 heh)
And I get 6" for 1967, 7" for 1968, and 8" from '69 and up.

Curiously, it also lists the PO1 wheel covers in 1968 and 1970 with PO2 all the other years. I believe the 1970 listing is a typo as all other info I gathered today puts both PO1 and 7" rims as yet another '68 only event.

My only explaination for what Charlie saw (mine is somwhat less certain to be original) is that they were running low on 7" Rally Wheels one particular week on the line and some supervisor made the "executive decision" to stretch the wheel stock by using regular Chevy 7" rims, but only on the PO1 cars where they could not be seen.

That's the only scenario ( that I can think of) that would account for Charlie's discovery to have been factory shipped - as it seems to be.

Sure looks like a P01....Got three more?

I agree with VetteBuyer. P01s/P02s came mounted on ralley wheels. If you're going to run the optional covers, sell the ralley wheels to a someone who wants them and make a few bucks.

I have rallys on there now, but my 72 came with a spare set of PO2s. Now that I know they will fit, I may have to clean them up and swap them out.

I have always been told the general rule on the Po2 wheel covers were they were put on over the rally rim, My uncle worked at a dealership and he stated the dealer would remove them and put them on other cars at the customer request, and then place the wheel cover over a standard rim. According to him all corvettes arrived new with rally wheels and the covers were placed over them, it was the standard wheel for corvette, you paid for the trim ring and center cap or the wheel cover, on certain customers they were given the trim ring and the center caps along with the wheel cover.

When I put on my P02's on my '72 (over my rallyes) I just pop off the trim rings, don't even have to remove the center caps...
I do need the valve stem extensions though

Is it likely that Chevrolet would go back to a conventionally styled steel wheel in 68?
The spinner caps were an option on C2s, but not for the C3s?

P01/P02 is the option code for wheel covers which were available for the 68-73 years. They mounted on the rally wheel in place of the rally wheel center caps and trim rings and were shipped with four valve stem extensions.

There are slight differences in the P01s (68 only) and the P02s and you need a practiced eye to tell the two apart at a glance.

While they were available, P01/P02s were the only factory wheel option.

Hi flr1,
First Post!!! Welcome!
Please, lets get this straight:

"According to him all corvettes arrived new with rally wheels and the covers were placed over them, it was the standard wheel for corvette, you paid for the trim ring and center cap or the wheel cover, on certain customers they were given the trim ring and the center caps along with the wheel cover".

The wheel was called a 'rally wheel'.
The Trim Rings and Center Caps were standard and included in the List Price of the car.
The car was shipped with 4 Caps and 4 Rings in the rear compartment.

The PO2 wheel cover was an Option. The Option was called "Wheel Covers, Custom". PO2 was the Option Number.
A car on which the PO2 Option was selected was equipped with 5 rally wheels, but it did NOT have the trim rings or center caps. 4 PO2 wheel covers and 4 valve stem extensions were shipped in the rear compartment.

What a dealer MAY have given a customer in the way of caps and rings is impossible to know.

Regards,
Alan
