Default Heater core install done - PICS

Finished the installation yesterday. Not too bad a job. Biggest PITA is getting the core out. You need to remove the clip on the right side by using a screw driver and lifting it away to free the two barbs that snap into two holes in the core frame box. Then I needed to make a hook out of clothes hangar wire to pull it out on the left side because there's nothing to grab onto on the core. There's also a pressure clip on the right side housing which I left alone. Once app is out I cleaned up everything. WHen I
installing the new core, place the rubber cushion back in place between the right side clip and fire wall first, then feet the tubes through it as you push in the core. Here's some pics.
The old core.

The retaining clip left side. Use a screw driver to lift the left side to release the barbs that click into the housing holes that hold it in place.

Clip on the right side.

My son helping.

New core finally in place.

Getting everything buttoned up.

I ran it for 15 minuets & no leaks! I'll add a few pics of the old core. There were a ton of leaves & pine needles which I suspect helped cause the corrosion & leak in the old one.

Glenn,

Excellent pics & write-up. Just in time for cooler fall temps.

Thanks Rickman! In this instance I'm glad I don't have AC. I was glad I didn't need to pull half the dash apart.

Thanks! My son was a big help. It was his idea to place the rubber cushion in position first, and then push the tubes through it. There's no way you can install the core with this on the core. The clips kept grabbing the rubber cushion.

Smart kid! Make sure you keep the keys in a safe place (until you're ready to let him drive it).

Yeah, he's sharp. I read that other thread about the daughter driving the vette when she got her license and I told him the day he got his, he could drive the vette as his first official licensed drive. He wanted to drive with his learners permit, but no way.

Great job and I give you credit for doing it yourself and speaking of heater cores...would you be interested in changing out the one in my 94?

Hi Glenn,
Nice pictures and helpful notes!
Just 2 points... are you going to get a patent for the "Removal Tool", and I saw the "installed date"; I think the builders did that on some of the pyramid pieces thousands of years ago.
Regards,
Alan

That removal tool took hours to develop so a patent may be in order!
The core is date coded w/ original sharpie ink!

I just did that job, but my 69 has A/C. Talk about a PITA. The more I dug in to this job, the more I found bad, and of course had to replace. It only cost about $500 to complete the whole job.

Damn! Cost $35 for the core and 10 bucks for new hoses.

Glenn, that is a job you want done and out of the way. Well done. My heater core wasn't leaking, but since I had my engine out I changed it any way. I didn't want to go back in there for a long time.

Thanks Fred! It wasn't to difficult, thanks to my son's help, and now that I've done it, I could do it much faster next time, though not in any rush to do it again any time soon.

Nice work Glenn,

When I did mine it was a bit harder with AC. You have to do it from the inside with A/C.

It does give you nice feeling of accomplishment

Nice job, Glenn. BTW: looks like a birds nest in that 1st image. Did you find pigeons nesting in there? LOL.

Your son and yourself did a fine job getting that ironed out nicely. If time and money ever come back around and you're motivated to dig back in, I'd share my experiences to clean up that housing.

I was scared to unbutton but after a few barley pops, I gained the courage to go for it. Ha!

I know you'll have a warm cockpit to enjoy this coming fall. I'm hoping to be equally comfortable once I'm running, out here in the West.
