Any easy way to replace right hand / passenger side sport mirror?

Does the glass need to removed?

With the door panel removed and the glass up you will have access to the nuts that mount it to the door.

I took off the door panel from the car. I had the window up, and the window down. I removed the door opener linkage. Not a whole lot of room to get a tool in.

Any further suggestions?

Could you loosen the door glass lower stops to provide access to the sport mirror mounting nuts?

Wouldn't this allow the door glass to go down further into the door?

When they are door glass lower stops are loose, roll the window down so that the top of the glass is below the bottom edge of the outer door seal.

When you figure it out let me know, I need to take both off. When my car was painted they put the mirror grommets on upside down and the mirrors tilt in too much. I just have not figured out how to get the damn things off.

On my 77 I found out that I had to remove the glass to get to the nuts. Taking out the glass is not that big of a deal and it gives you an excuse to clean and relube the tracks

I'm working on painting my 1980, I also removed the glass to get access to the mirror nuts.

I have removed sport mirrors on both a 1979 and 1980 without removing
the door glass. To gain easier access to the mirror mounting nuts:
Lossen the lower front and rear glass stops at the bottom of the
window channels. This will allow the glass to lower a bit more.
Next remove the front and rear felt covered window anti-rattle
bumpers. Then take some paint stir sticks to use as spacers to
push and hold the window glass as far inward as possible.
There is now enough room to reach the door mirror bolts. I used
a 1/4" drive socket in either the 3/8" or 7/16" size and ground it
down to make the socket shorter. I also used a 1/4" breaker bar
instead of a ratchet as the breaker bar had a thinner profile to
enable fitting the socket behind the door glass. Once the bolts
were a bit loose, you can reach them by using a box end wrench.

That seems lie a lot of work, is it that hard to remove the glass? and how do you remove the glass?

As described that is only 4 nuts you have to loosen or remove to get the glass out of the way. I used that exact method when removing/installing my sport mirrors and you can get access to the nuts in about 10 minutes worth of work (including removing the door panel).

Far simpler than removing the glass IMO. In fact I could swear my 78 only had 1 stop for the glass and the two felt covered pieces at the top of the door.

Resurrecting an old one here but here's to hoping. Any luck getting the mirror off? I hope after all these years that someone figured it out. I need to get mine off.

I suggest after taking the door panel off, remove the two felt anti rattle bumpers. This allow the door glass to move more and access to the two mirror nuts....but still not alot of room....small wrench...10mm I think and a bit of patience should get the mirror off the door.

But to turn the mirror gaskets over would require the cable to be removed....pulled through....and that is easy....putting the cable back is another lesson in patience. Lots of sharp metal edges on that door panel....beware.

I just did this on my 80. I loosened the glass tracks and moved the glass back in the door. Then used a 1/4 rachet with a swivel extension and did the job. Pain in the butt.

Ok. getting it out seems straight forward enough. How was getting it back in?
