Underhood and Engine Compartment Paint?
Ok, I've got the motor pulled in my 76 project, in preparation for the TPI engine swap. I need to get the engine compartment cleaned and painted, and I need to know what paint will work the best? I'm looking for an aerosol paint, not something from a spray gun. Suggestions?

Virginia Vettes sells the under hood John Deere paint for $40/ kit. It is 1 qt of paint, one pint of reduced and a half pint of catalyst. Material is in stock and can be UPS to your house.

Krylon semi-flat black; the 5 ball stuff if you can find it.

Horror stories of those who omit the hood insulator (ie. custom underhood paint jobs etc.), then when something like oil, brake fluid, etc. finds its way on the underside of the hood and thus bubbles the paint on the top of the hood...they kick themselves in the *** for not putting it back on to help prevent that. Which usually results in either a new hood or a lot of time and effort to remove the contaminants to be able to repaint it.
I was just making sure.

The 'new' Krylon stuff works OK, too. It just takes longer to dry. Semi-flat on surfaces; semi-gloss on accessories and components.

So is the John Deere stuff the only way to go, or simply the best? Also, how does it match the factory underhood appearance? I'm going to be doing the inner fenders, firewall, underside of the hood, and the frame and suspension parts. Durability is of course an issue. I'm a little leary of using Krylon for all of this, since you can get some mottling as it dries. I've heard of Eastwood products being used....any others products that people can suggest here?

The frame is a 'component'...it should be semi-gloss black along with accessories, brackets, etc. I would recommend POR 15 for the frame or go with Rustoleum if you wanted to save money and don't need a "forever" paint job on the frame.
Krylon (or other spray can paint) will not be 'mottled' if you clean/prep the surface well before you spray. And it will hold up well. It can be used for fender wells, also. The JD Blitz is a sturdier paint than Krylon, but both will do a good job.

Uh....'components' are semi-gloss and 'surfaces' are semi-flat. Did you miss the start of this thread?

Well, I guess I did - so, continue tapping your toes with impatience if it bothers you that much....unlike you, I'm working on my first Corvette & aren't as knowledgeable....so I may ask a question more than once!
