For $7K I wouldn't worry about 'matching numbers' and I'd look farther afield.

Just by your criteria, you're in the 74-82 yeargroup.....and by 74, I mean BASE engine cars - not BBlocks, not ragtops. You're not touching ANY #'s matching 68-73 for that low $$
$7K will get you a nice 78-82 driver, good luck

It's gonna be hard trying to find a #'s matching Vette at that price range, and if you do find it, it's gonna need a lot of work. I found my '74 L82 #'s matching Vette on craigslist for $1500, and am currently working on it. I had to buy both bumpers, the interior, and rebuild entire brake system. fortunately it only has 72,XXX miles and is a 4spd, so I'm happy with it.

I've found maybe 25 craigslist ad's, the problem is what I said above.

How much would a new paint job cost me?

A 7K car with matching numbers (and the seller knows what he has) will probably have poor paint, a rotted frame, bad mechanics or all three. Choose a mechanically sound car over one that is numbers correct.

Why does it have to be a numbers matching, It won't bring
you a big payday when you resale it. The rubber bumper cars
are Great blank canvases to create your own personalized Corvette.

Find you a clean car that someone else has already rebuilt the drive
train in, and build of of that and you well have a great car to have
fun in.

Hope to see you in a vette soon,

Riggs.

I bought my 79 for not much more than your price range, and it's an L-82 4 spd to boot. It is a matching number car on the big items, (engine, trans, rear end). It was and still is a very good running car, many of the interior pieces had been replaced, so it is in nice shape, but the paint was shot. I had to strip it to fiberglass and repaint.

Unless you plan on DRIVING the car!

Why put so much money into a paint job that makes you leery of driving and enjoying it?

That is unless you just want to sit and stare at it all the time.
