Default I need 5 gals of degreaser.

I have a parts washer that I am getting ready to use but I can't figure out a cost effective degreaser. I wanted to get the Berryman parts cleaner from O'Reilys auto parts but it's $70 for 5 gal. On the C2 forum someone said that Safety Kleen is basically 9 parts mineral spirits to one part Dexron transmission fluid don't know if thats true or not. I just want a good parts degrease that works well probably petroleum based and is not to expensive. What do you think?

The non flamable cleaners just don't cut the grease quickly enough for me, I got better things to spend my time on. I use mineral spirits from Lowes. I guess Safety Kleen agrees.

I use gasoline and a toothbrush and a sandblaster if needed.. if you are not a full time garage and need it 2-3 times a year... good enough for me.. sure you gotta be careful, but bubba lives in me!

I use this stuff

It works just as well as Castrol Super Clean, but it's much cheaper. I think I pay 5-6 bucks a gallon at Wal Mart.

It's a great herbicide too.

I use mineral spirits also and add a quart of atf to it. With out the atf it tends to dry out your hands. Gas works o.k. in a well vented place but I would keep it out of a parts washer. I used gas soaked rags to remove the slime under my car but anything that could spark was turned off at the time. The purple cleaner works o.k. but it will leave your hands feeling slimy and then they dry out and cause the skin on my hands to peel and drive me crazy for severial days.

Thanks for the advice I went to Menard's and got 4 cans of mineral spirits because I found out that I really only needed 4 gals. But my parts washer sprung a leak it seems that the hose from the pump is rotted out. Good thing I checked it with water first.

None of the stuff mentioned is very good for you and is absorbed thru your skin.
Whatever you use, wear gloves.

If there is a place around you to purchase 5 gal pails of mineral spirits, thats the way to go. Let them soak a couple hours and then use the stiff bristle brush that came with the tub. I then sandblast or other.................

I use PSC1000 from Tractor Supply. It is basically mineral spirits and works very well in my parts washer. At $35 for a 5 gallon bucket it is a pretty good deal as well.

I wear Nitrile gloves when working in the parts washer. Any of the solvents discussed here will be absorbed through your skin to some degree. It MAY not harm you in the long run, or maybe it will. I don't take chances on this kind of stuff anymore. Lymphoma is not a pleasant thing to go through.

Mineral spririts as mentioned above. You can throw a match into it and it won't light. Gasoline is much more flamable and risky. The Tractor Supply stuff sounds like the way to go. Let parts soak [covered, to keep the spirits from evaporating], then use a stiff brush.

If you want to be "green", use SuperClean from Wal-Mart. It is biodegradable and does a good job, considering it is not a volatile solvent. Use gloves with this stuff, too; it is caustic and will do a 'number' on your hands if you leave it in cleaner for even a short time. SuperClean may be less expensive than spirits, but it will evaporate quicker and when it does, it will leave a gummy sludge-like residue.

GUNK S-C SUPER CONCENTRATE DEGREASER when mixed with 9 parts of kerosene works well in my parts washer.

I use Marine clean from POR-15. Works well diluted 1:1 on greasy engine & chassis parts. I use a 5 gallon bucket, a parts, brush & scotch brite pads. A parts washer would sure be easier. Usually get it locally for about $22 a gallon

This stuff is incredible. Watch out though, it'll take the skin right off your hands....literally. Tractor supply has it as well.

I use kerosene, witch breaks down the grease pretty quick as you rub over it with a rag
or brush, then I cut the kerosene with thinner to get rid of the oily film before I paint it.
The mineral spirits sounds like a good ideal as well, I think I will try that some time.

Riggs.

My question is...how do you guys get rid of the old mineral spirits in the parts washer when it becomes filthy? I know that advance auto around here won't accept it for recycling, and safety kleen charges a fortune to take it.

The landfill had a free day to get rid of it last Saturday, but I missed it and that opportunity doesn't come around very often.
