Default 79 L-82 4spd tach redline

I got a used tach from dodosmike here on the board, it was in very nice condition and exactly as described, so thanks Mike. Now my problem. My existing tach has a 5700 rpm redline, the one Mike sent out of his parts car has a 6K redline. He said the car is a 78, but he didn't know if it was a 4 spd or auto. Anyone with an original 79 L-82 4 spd know what the redline should be?

Karol, where did you get the info from? I thought my old tach (which I assumed to be original) showed a 5700 rpm redline, but of course I could be wrong, since the 100's arent' marked individually. G-Sting, just to clarify, that does look like a 6K redline in the pic. Is that right?

Yes. The Orange zone appears to be from 5600-6000 rpm. The Red zone begins at 6000 rpm on this original '79 L82 4 speed, no A/C, tachometer.

According to the "1979 Chevrolet Owner's Manual" all it says is:
"Never permit the dial pointer on the tachometer face to enter the red zone or operate continuously in the orange zone with any engine."

Both my 79s, one auto and one 4speed, are as G-Sting pictured.
Altho my late production 4speed tach doesn't have the "5" numbers, just the "10s". 85 mph speedo, too.

My 78s have the lower redline.

For discussion purposes, the parts car did NOT have A/C.
It was a L82 Auto car.

I think I might be able to help here.

According to my research, in actual practice 1979 L-82 cars used three different tachometers during the model year. I believe all ’79 L-82 cars began production with the same tach as installed in the ‘78 L-82 non-AC cars. This tach had a 5600 redline. The “L-82” and cross-flag emblems printed on its face matched the style found on the exterior badges of these cars.

Starting somewhere around sequence number 30,000, I’m fairly sure that the L-82 redline was changed to read 6,000 rpm. This second tach was otherwise the same as the first tach.

At about sequence number 50,000, give or take, the tach was changed again. This time it was the tach designed for and installed in 1980 L-82 Corvettes. The redline remained 6,000 rpm, but the tachometer’s “L-82” and cross-flag emblems now matched the font/look of the badges found on the body of ‘80 Corvettes.

I’ve observed this tachometer pattern is fairly consistent in the photos I’ve seen of many hundreds of ’79 cars that I’ve been able to also note the sequence number.
