Default 1972 LT1 Alum. Valve covers

Do the "original" 1972 LT1 Alum. valve covers have a the rubber push in "Oil" cap or the twist on oil cap. I see most of the aftermarket covers have the twist on caps.
I have seen original pictures of Survivors that had the push in Oil cap. Were the originals polished to a high shine?

I am leaning toward the rubber one as being correct myself based on pictures that I have seen. Haven't seen any aftermarket retailers offering the ones with the rubber plug type. all seem to be twist on.

Yup, rubber. Here's a pic of Roy's (rvasquez) restored 72 LT-1. You can partially see the oil cap.

Default 1970 LT1 'OIL cap push in

370 hp 1970 LT1 crate engine, purchased Summer 1970 Dexter Chevrolet $612.00....Part of my continued HP upgrade for my 62 FI Vette. As GM put more HP in the small block engines the 62 was a beneficiary. This is correct as to components external and internal. The 'Oil cap is a push in and is printed "OIL" in the center, not a twist in...see below it should answer your questions.....

Well looks like rubber push in is it. Any Corvette aftermarket retailers offer the correct type?

Hi #72,
I don't think the original valve covers were polished at all, certainly not to a high shine like you see now.
I've not seen the 71/72 style offered in reproduction, so I think a used set is your best chance.
Regards,
Alan

nope, not polished. In fact I dont think any OE aluminum valve covers for GM were polished. See my pictures above....Some chrome steel covers were available in lue of painted covers on select applications however.

The finish was like this from the factory.

1970 LT_1 had twist on type, not rubber push in.

These are factory '72 LT-1 covers. The finish was brought up slightly with some metal polish, but it's more like satin.

Mine is number 185 of the assembly line built in August. It had the push in OIL rubber cap.
