455 with 185 hp? Wow that's pathetic. What's the highest hp a stock 455 and 454 ever came out with?

It is a bit sluggish but I know I can beat an impreza topping out at 139. It got better after increasing the compression.

Well, in a Corvette, the highest HP rating on a 454 was 390 Hp in 1970. Keep in mind though, that you still have the gross/net thing going on. That 390 HP is gross, and the 185 is net. The net HP for a 1970 Corvette with 454 was around 300 somewhere.

Wasn't the ls6 454 in the '71 'vette rated at 425hp (gross)?

I think the 70 Chevelle SS LS-6 454-450 hp (gross).
That would be a fun engine to put in a Vette!

Yes, you are correct! That would be the highest horse 454. I don't know what the net rating on that one would be, probably around 315-320 if I had to take a guess.

Now that you have me thinking about it more, L-71s were 435 Hp and L-68s were 400, although they were both 427s, they are also both higher then LS5, as were L-88 and L-89, but I don't want to guess at the real HP rating of those motors.

Not the 455 1974 T/A, it was the 400 that I have seen listed as 185HP for 1975. It was a drastic change.

Prolly faster than 53 Plymouth with a flathead six and fluid drive!

Seriously though, I do wonder how that blue flame six stacked up against other domestic cars in '53. Say for example, a 53 V-8 OHV (331?) cadillac, or a flathead V-8 Ford. Lot of weight there though!

Further, they failed to mention the Fiat 124 at all. I had one of those too. A new one in 1970. The car was a performance wonder and an electrical and material nightmare. The car would flat outrun the contemporary MGs and TRs with its 1135cc DOHC 4 cyl, but the paint, interior and electricals were absolute crap and the quality of the mechanical parts was high grade pot metal. Mine ate four starters and two steering boxes in 45K miles. I replaced it with a 240Z and was a happy camper.
I had one of those for a couple years and it was a BLAST to drive! Mine held up reasonably well as used as it was. I thought it was put together pretty well considering the competition of the brittish verts of the era.

I agree with that. My car is so slow it took 7 years to make it from my carport to the street - about 30 feet.
