Default Adjusting the clock speed, I have done a search but...

I just took two clocks apart and now have one original working clock using parts from both.

There seems to be two or three opinions on adjusting the clock so it is accurate.

One involves resetting it everyday at exactly the same time of day. ( need to set my alarm?)

There is mention of if the clock is running slow you turn the clock clockwise to 12 to speed it up and counter clockwise to slow it down if it's running fast.

The other says set it no more than three minutes either way depending on whether it's running fast or slow.

I realize that it may take a few times no matter which way is right.

Did GM have any instructions and if so has anyone got any that they can share?

TIA

If the clock is still out of the car, you can manually adjust (tiny adjustments) the oscillating spring tensioner.

Go to the link below, and towards the bottom there is a picture with it marked with a red arrow.

I just hooked it up to a battery and set both my alarm clock and the vette clock at 12 o'clock. I'll see how far it's off in 24 hours.

Mashman, that was the third way I read about but I had forgot where I saw it and what it said to do, thanks.

The OEM clock is self-adjusting IF you follow the procedure to set it properly. Your "adjust it to the correct time, at the same time on consecutive days" is correct. The adjustment 'rate' mechanism assumes that you are changing it every 24 hours. After 2-3 daily adjustments, the clock should be dead on.

Is this what the owners manual or some other GM paperwork says?

I've got a few weeks before my radio gets back so I've got time to experiment.

Useful info. I got my clock and radio working last weekend. Now I can put the gauges back in without worrying about setting the clock!

I've always just run the clock forward 12 hours if it is slow and 12 hours backwards if it is fast. I was thinking this only changed it a couple min at a time, guess I better check the books.

After 24 hours I was 8 minutes fast so I turned it counter clockwise 12 hours.
I'll update tomorrow.

Wrong....wrong....wrong.. If it was 8 minutes 'fast' after 24 hours, all you needed to do was back it up 8 minutes. Tomorrow, when you check it again, it will be really, really, really S-L-O-W. [Essentially, you 'told' it that it was nearly 24 hours fast over the last 24 hours.

Well, I can't say what I'd like to but I've got at least 3 weeks before I'm putting this back together so I guess I'll be alright.

Sorry, I was so 'brash'. But your clock would probably have been dead-on had you just made that minor 8 minute adjustment. It will only take 2-3 days (of making the proper adjustment) to get it back on target. The internal correction system will make positive or negative adjustments, based on which way you turn the stem when you reset the time.

I didn't take it as being brash at all, just getting your point across.

Default Adjusting the clock speed

This is the page from 1975 Corvette Owners Manual. The OEM clock has an automatic regulator. You must advance or retard the hands by at least 3 minutes. No regulation will be introduced if the clock is reset for an error of less than 3 minutes.

Hopefully they've got it figured out by now...
