1968 coupe with factory sidepipes.......

Don't tell anybody, but I have a '96 'vette with an LS1 engine. It was a testing mule, and it accidently got parked near the end of the assembly line one day, and they gave it a VIN and sold it. I keep it right next to my '74 with the factory 36 gallon gas tank. Next week I'm going to look at a '62 split window coupe, it was owned by a little old lady who only drove it to church.............once a year! She thinks Zora Duntov's skeleton might be in the trunk, she's a busy old lady, she hasn't had time to check, but here's hoping!!!!

Hi
There was just a little while ago a thread here that Proteam claims owning a 68 Sidepipe Vette that appears to be authentic.
I'd say, the side pipes are eligible for all the gill sharks , hence 68 + 69.
Don't destroy my dreams !

Hi,
Think about this.
The side exhaust required a different rear valance. Since the 68 had the back-up lights under the bumper, the car would have needed a 'one-off' valance panel.
I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like.
Regards,
Alan

We would all like to know the answer to that.
Go slowly. Everything entered on the C3 Registry is done by the owner. Nothing entered is verified.

The fact that this is claimed to be an early (67) pilot line car makes it even less likely the exhaust (69) was ever installed at the factory. As was said, the description really makes no claim that the exhaust is any more original to the car than the white lettered tires

Since it was closer to a 67 car then a 69 model, date wise I was thinking the same ...........& thats what I meant in my previous post by typing early

I don't doubt them one bit. I have a very late production '69 that came with a prototype 454 block, 4 bolt mains, and forged crank that someone stole off the truck line just for this car. It also came with extremely rare prototype fiberglass '70 sidepipe covers that never made actual production, along with a bunch of other weird, mismatched parts. You say it didn't happen? I say prove it. I've got an affidavit from my long lost Aunt Martha who bought this car new. She was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters" and got acquainted with bigwigs at GM which is how she got this car. Of course, she's been dead ten years now, and her gravestone and records of her birth were all tragically lost in a California earthquake. It's an amazing history which really enhances my car's value.

1968 Corvette with factory side pipes
A friend of mine in our club just bought a 1968 coupe with factory sidepipes. Now I know sidepipes were not a factory option on 1968's, but he has a window sticker that looks original and it lists the sidepipes.
The car was originally ordered by the owner of the local Chevrolet dealership as his personal car. According to the VIN, the car was built on May 1, 1968. Is it possible that the owner had enough pull with Chevrolet to get the sidepipes on his car, knowing they were going to be an option in 1969? The guy that just bought the car doesn't know if the tank sticker is still on the car. Is it possible the factory put sidepipes on some late model 1968's to test the fit and finish to get ready for 1969?

Hi J,
Welcome!!!
In 1980 perhaps the side exhaust didn't even NEED to be "aftermarket".... it's possible that the system could still be ordered/bought from the Parts Department of your local Chevrolet Store.
Regards,
Alan
