for my 78 pace car. looking for as close to an original goodyear tire p255 60 15. i know all about coker and lucas tire companies, but i have a real problem having to pay about 400/tire. is there a better alternative. i can buy new runflats for my C5 (not that i want to replace the OEM with runflats when it is necessary) for 1600, lol. and get excellent hankook or nittos for well under 900. can someone provide some help or is it their way or the highway as far as at least looking "period". my car isn't NCRS (unless you break that down to not correctly restored society), so i'm not looking for points, just looking for something that will look like it belongs on the car for the period.
I gave up on a 15 inch solution. I don't know how to post directly into the forum but if you go to my profile you'll see my 80 (still in work) with 17 inch Ansen Sprints and high speed 235 55 17 Z rated Pirellis. The key is that it really looks period but handles like a big Miata with the sticky pirellis which are not overwide but have more tread on the ground than my old 255 60 15s. I had to use a 1/4 inch space to clear the disc brakes. The 235 55 17s happen to be a standard Mustang GT size so they are plentiful and cheap and are safe past 140 mph. The wheels and tires set me back just a bit south of $1000 but replacement tires will run under $200 each. By the way the height is 27.2 inches which puts in on the money for the original total diameter.
i had seen those while i was searching around, but thanks for bringing them back to my attention as i had forgotten about seeing them. i agree they look like the best solution. i appreciate the help
And the bfg radial t/a's are a very classic looking tire. I had them on my 73 camaro way back when. The tread pattern was a little different , but they were the "in" tire back in the day.
interestingly, the guy i spoke with at tire rack suggested that the firestone indy 500 was a better tire even though it was a bit cheaper (an added advantage, lol). since they have always been really good about knowing their products in the past, i have to trust them on this one also. either way i doubt i would be dissapointed.

I agree. On my second set now. Took the car on a 2,500 mile trip in July. Drove hard on mountain roads in the Black Hills, 75-80 mph for hours on interstates at over 100 degrees, and through a cloudburst on I-70 in Kansas. Quiet, great traction in all situations, good wear, and good price. What's not to like?
