So I took the '74 for a 10 mile round trip tonight with the exhaust cut-outs uncorked, wowzaaaa, I smell like exhaust, my ears are ringing, I woke my kid up, wife thinks I've lost my mind, all in all, a great nite...
I have been sitting beside 300hp piston and bigger turbine engines in airplanes for 25 years now. I have a ringing in my left ear that while not annoying, is always there. Now I use Bose noise cancelling headsets while flying and earplugs while running any lawn equipment and especially while driving my 68 with the side pipes. Take care of the ears. My wife thinks I've lost my mind too. That's priceless.

good for you!! worth the minor inconveniences, lol. i agree that the best part is about your wife's opinion. mine already knows i'm nuts, lol!!
At VIR in May I watched an open stock car with 850 hp running practice laps and stood with his timer at the start line feet from the track when this guy with open headers came rolling by at 175 mph. I knew he was coming. I could see him coming. I could hear him coming.
When he rolled by us it still scared the bejesus out of me!
My exhaust has a nice deep sound but when you get above 40 mph it's way behind me so you don't really hear it. The other day when it was on a dyno stand and I was watching the pulls you could really hear it wind up out of the exhaust, a perspective I don't usually get.
Yeah, the modern quiet mufflers are nice and sedate. Nah, there's nothing like one of these v8's of any h.p. winding up through low flow resistance mufflers. I don't give a crap if somebody doesn't enjoy the sound. I love it.
