Dont want to rain on your day, but I bet you that the bulb is fine, the module is bad, they all go south at some point....

I had 2 81's and when I got the first one the low fuel lamp worked then went south then on the second 81 it never worked,
It 1/4 turns into the back of the center gauge board, it has 3 contacts and measures ohms,
About 8 years ago when I stopped fooling with mine no one offer a working replacement or repair they might now, ones you see on Fleabay normally are DOA,
I was going to use a generic low fuel add on that a street rod outfit sold, just wire it in and place the bulb in that hole in the dash,
I believe other GM cars used them but dont know if they would swap or be any good,
Sad as I love the bells and whistles,

Wilcox has em'....Go to his website ...to the repair section and he has a picture of one there....He probably sells them if he has the picture.....I wonder if mine works...I never run it down that low and the CB mike blocks it anyway.

Jeff you had my hopes up, but Wilcox only offers the bulb and lenes,
and under repairs is this very good picture showing what the problem child looks like,

Unless someone stepped in after market I doubt you will find these in new working order,

My 81 had that cool cassette CB I went thru it and it was not only working perfect but the CB part was peaked, sold it to a purist.

Oh well...Sorry...I figured he'd have it, seeing the picture and all......I can't believe you sold your CB....I LOVE mine and use it on the highway when using the gas pedal heavily....It's a riot hearing the truckers chirp when I'm cruising by at 90-100mph.....I surprise the hell out of them when I answer back....It's hilarious.....They actually love seeing it blow by at speed......

I've had 2 board that I needed to bridge some bad printed circuit foil with some soldered on wire.
Don't be surprised if your module is missing, seems to happen to many. If it is, don't just put a bulb in the slot as it will always be on.

Well module is still there and in relatively good shape. Replaced the bulb but couldn't get the light to come on even after waiting 10-30 second delay. The Transistors Sylvania ECG159 as Roger points out- are they still available out there? If not, Is there a cross ref at radio shack? Thx.

HUGE THANKS to dar322, Roger and all of you guys.... FINALLY I FIXED MINE!!!!! it took me a long time!!!! but now it works and believe it not... I have fixed all the bells a whistles the car came with from the factory(80 Vette) work!!! The alarm, fuel gauge, underhood lamp, clock, defogger, AC, power antenna, etc etc etc...I am happier than a kid with his Xmas present...

Thanks to all, and I will be watchful for other postings where people need help with these accessories so I can help with the hassle of fixing them, after having done it all.

Regards from the white north.

I did replace it with a quartz one...however, I have the original, and a member of this forum, Binnie, in Nova Scotia, fixes them.

With the cold weather here in Canada, seems we are better off with Quartz units.
