I don't know the exact brand used, but it was a strip-type caulk/adhesive. {Pretty sure it was put on the door surface with a pressurized gun.} I know that it would not harden (at least, in the first 10 years of its life). We used to call it "ackempuckey", for lack of a better term.
I'm not sure you can buy even similar vapor barriers to what was originally there. It was clear vinyl, but it was formed with 'domed' areas to go over protrusions. Some of the vendor catalogs (and the AIM) show the configuration of that piece, but repops aren't that close to the original shape. (Not sure why that matters, since it can't be seen with the door panel on.)

Hi,
The original black strip adhesive on my 71's doors had a string embedded in it. I've always thought that this was to prevent the sealer from breaking in pieces as the worker put it on.
The 3M sealer seems to be the same material.
Regards,
Alan
