Default 1971 oil pressure gauge

Hi, when I bought my 71 the car came with a under dash oil gauge with a oil line connected to it. The gauge works and reads well. The oil gauge in the bezel was disconnected. The old line was still connected to the old gauge but disconnected at the engine. I would like to use the gauge in the bezel. I took apart the bezel gauges. I took the oil gauge that was in the bezel and hooked it up the the under dash hose to see if it would read and if it did it would use the line for the under dash and run it into the bezel oil gauge. When I connected the bezel oil gauge to the line going to the under dash gauge, it didnt read. The fittings were the same. When I reconnected the under dash gauge it worked well. The question is, does this mean the bezel gauge bad? thanks

the gauge is just a cylinder with a spring attached to the piston. unless it leaks, it's probably just seized. try cleaning it with solvent.

For testing purposes, you can just use compressed air for exercising the gauge. The gauge just reads pressure...it doesn't care what the 'medium' is.

Mine stopped reading after the car had extensive bodywork because dirt/dust got in it. Just take it apart and give it a good clean with WD40 and it should start working again.

Hi Guys, thanks for advise. Iam going to try these tips when I get home today. I will let you know what happens. If this works that would be great. The only thing besides the clock is going to be the temp gauge next....thanks again

The vast majority of temp gauge problems are caused by #1 bad temp sender; #2 broken or separated signal wire; #3 someone put teflon tape on the sending unit and it can't find a 'ground' path to the engine block.

Ok, I cleaned the gauge. I checked the after market gauge with the car started and got around 60lbs. I connected the stock gauge I cleaned and got around 45+or - 5lbs. Is this acceptable?...thanks

sure, anything within that range is ok. just remember that with a hot engine at idle, the psi may drop to 10 pounds or so unless you use 40w oil.

The needle is not indexed. If you're confident the after market gauge is accurate (sounds like it is): Pull the needle off your factory gauge. Start engine. Push it back on pointing at 60 PSI.

You can adjust the needle reading by slightly tweaking the bellcrank on the backside of the gauge. Just be careful how much.
