I think you must keep the pictures coming. This is my next project and your questions as well as the CF experts' answers are very helpful.

Is there a trick to applying the paint? I tried a brush and my finger, both with poor results.................

I hold the pinion yoke with my other hand so there is more pressure on the gears. Makes a better impression.

Very nice work. I rebuilt my 68's last summer. Not too bad of a project but I had the help of a forum member. Here are a few pictures that might be a aid to you project. I used a belt to put pressure on the gears. Best of luck with the project.

Matt,
Don't worry about the marking paint. I've seen all I need. Your gears are worn out. The drive pattern is running off the heel of the teeth. So the main question is how far do you want to go with it: repair or full rebuild? Did you find the snap ring?

I never did find a snap ring.....

Repair vs rebuild will probably come down to the cost of it......and timeline, I guess. I would love to do a full rebuild, but at the moment, probably cannot afford it. What would a repair entail? New gears? Or would new gears constitute a rebuild?
