Default fan shroud

do i need it will my car overheat without it? my 79s shroud is broken all to hell and is there but barely if i remove it completely will the fan loose its tunnel effect and not be able to pull enough cool air across at idle or in traffic? i live in so cal where the traffic makes you want to jump off a bridge! when i lived in mo an had a broken plastic shroud i would just removed it b/c most of my driving was long distance at at least 50mph so i never had an overheat issue. here it is differnet what do you guys think?

Your fan will not pull air through the radiator as effectively without the shroud. So if you are driving slow or stop-n-go traffic on a warm day, your car may overheat.

You will see many early cars without a radiator shroud. As cars got smaller grills and more horsepower, engineers worked to improve cooling of our cars. So I'd say you probably need a radiator shroud. Chevrolet didn't put them on there for looks.

thanks ss that is what i figured i would here but you never know if someone comes on an says other wise i need to freshen up everthing under the hood of my car it looks pretty sad but for me driveability and safety come first so i am doing supsension rebuild first then all new brake lines then new fuel lines, trans cooler lines and then make the hood/interior look pretty

Include a replacement shroud and seals as part of your "driveability" efforts.

Might also be a good time to have the radiator cleaned/cored if it needs it.

If GM put it on there, it's because they absolutely could not make it work with out it

how much do they charge for that set up how ling did it take to hook it up what turns on the fans? is it just the thermostat temp sending unit? i would think it was just a power ground and a thermal switch right?
