Thoughts on car for purchase
I figured I would just have a thread for all the cars that I am really considering, instead of a separate one for each. With that said...here is the first car that has really gotten my attention! Thoughts...
1977
Matching Numbers / 3-speed automatic transmission.
104,000 MILES
The engine is strong & there are no issues with this car - just age... It may need a paint job w/in 5 years, but the original paint is still holding up well (& is garage kept). I've listed everything I've done to the car over the last 5 years (in which it has gained about 2,000 miles during this time - so these upgrades are still "new").
- New timing chain & timing chain cover
- New brake callipers & pads
- New shocks
- New ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, and neopreme bushings
- New half shafts and U-joints in the rear end
- New carpet, leather seats, door panels, and steering wheel
- New Holly carburetor
- New Edelbrock intake manifold
- New water pump
- New alternator, ignition & wires
- New exhaust from engine back with Cats and flowmasters
- New rubber around doors & t-tops
- New luggage rack & tail lights
- New JVC MP3 stereo & speakers
- New fuel pump
- New radiator hose goose-neck
- New rear-main seal
- New headlight vacuum tubes
- New fuel-line from tank to mid-chassis
- New transmission, including new gaskets around pan
- New oil-pan gasket
- New AC compressor lines (not yet charged, but I do have belt for compressor)
- New valve-covers & gaskets
As far as work 'yet to be accomplished...' ... I've wanted to replace the rear-main seal that dribbles about 1 drop of oil per day. When the car is cold (not driven for several days), the leak actually stops. It's only a 1-day job I'm familiar with --- but work prohibits me from taking too much time off to take care of it. It's not a bad leak, so I just keep a small rag under the car where it hits the floor in the garage. Other future tasks: replacing the door-handles on the outside of the door (the spring tension is getting weak in both of them & eventually they'll need to be replaced). Also - the vacuum system diaphram in the headlights (to raise and lower the lights)... the little diaphram should be replaced so the lights go up & down quicker (than they currently do... it takes 10 seconds for them to raise / lower... rather fun to watch, actually). For cosmetics - if you were to want to 'show' the car, it would probably need a new paint job & therefore, you'd also want to replace the read & nose cones (bumpers)... since you can't paint them, the new ones would have to be matched with the correct color on the rest of the car.
OTHERWISE, there is nothing wrong with the car... no rust, engine runs great, my girlfriend loves it, etc. .... HOWEVER, I need to make room in the garage for something else. And - ultimately - I know someone else would rather enjoy this car more than I do... though I would miss it a little.
Yes I know that I need to see the car in person, as well as check for rust in all the right places etc...but these are the pics I have at the moment.
So for the time being, lets assume there are no real major rust issues. Thoughts on the car? What do you think is a good price?

Pretty clean... Lots of "news"... Seems an honestish post with what still needs to be done. Overall, (if everything checks out in person--little or no birdcage or frame rust-- and the leak isn't worse than he says it is)... $6500-7500 would be a good buy. If it's higher I've seen better for less lately. Of course, I'm in MIchigan where a lot of things are for sale for less. JMO

A: do you want this 77 and the changes made to it? B: What is the seller asking?
I think the CL '72 is a tad high.

One day it would probably end up being Steel City Gray, or Black...but who knows. I love the tan interior though

Looks like "good bones" to me and a well cared for car that you can enjoy while you update and personalize.
Without benefit of a close up examination, the pricepoint seems entirely reasonable to me and lets you continue the update process without feeling totally upside down.
Good luck - -

I would consider it a good deal at that price. If you could get the '72 for under $10k I would consider that a very good deal.
But they're both WHITE. Why are so many C3's white???

Why not shoot him a $6,500 cash offer and see if he bites?
Remember: The one who can walk away controls the sale. So don't be afraid to give him a legitimate (if a little low) offer and let him think about it. You can always come back in a day or two and offer a little more.
Good Luck!
