Luggage rack
I'm looking to put a luggage rack on my '68 Coupe. I see that there are two types. One is a six hole, and the other, 8 hole.
Does anybody know which is closest to the "Correct" type used back in '68?
Thanks,
Desi6327

Then there's always the hideous tilt-up aftermarket that was available back then...
(yes that was my car...)

Do yourself a favor...dont do it.
You can have the 6 holes drilled in my rear deck. I cant stand the rack. Was almost a deal breaker. I wont even charge you for the holes and I will pay the shipping.
My car is 25 year old lacquer...I wish I could easily fill and repaint. For now I will just have to look at the 6 plugs.

Melting Slicks
Years ago, at work, we made a rack out of SS tubing and it had suction cups on it. I would tie wrap the front to the back astro grilles and used bungie cords on the back to the rear metal bumpers on my car. I am sorry that I scrapped it years ago. I ,personally, do not care for a permanent rack on a vette. Why can't someone come up with this idea for a new removable rack? Lou.

I am absolutely NOT knocking anyone that has a rack. They are extremely useful. I need to make the concious decision before I leave my home to have the tops with me or not. If I choose to go topless, I can't buy anything of value (except for my last stop) and have to deal with the strength of the sun for however long my trip lasts.
That said, I don't like the way the rack looks. It is as out of place (to me) as a trailer hitch. VERY USEFUL, mind you...I'd love to put a receiver-mounted bike rack on my car. But on such an overt SPORTS car, it is just out of place. To me.
With the overwhelming strength of rare-earth magnets, it is a shame someone hasn't come up with the idea of mounting some of those under the fiberglass skin and having a rack that "mounts" by magnetic attraction through the body...

the car was Corvette Orange metallic with black vinyl - I thought that rack really dressed up the back of the car! I've been debating adding one to the current `73 but am reconsidering that addition since there's not been one previously.
Thanks for the "logic" on the tilt !

Shouldn't there be a CF fine for installing a luggage rack?

I have the luggage racks on my 72 and 73. They were on the cars when I bought them. I do not have a rack on my 75. I think the chrome racks look better on the 68-73 vettes with the chrome rear bumpers. The racks look out of place on the 74-77 versions.

I have a rack on my '71 convertible. I really am on the fence if I like it or not. I wouldn't have one on a coupe but it really comes in handy on my vert. With the top down you have very little room back there so the extra storage is great when driving to the beach. BTW I have an 8 hole SS. It was on the car when I bought it 12 years ago. I've thought about taking it off when I get my car resprayed in the future but I've heard no matter how hard you try to fill the holes the eventually reappear as dimples.

i had one on my '75 and i took it off when i had it painted. It was nice to hold the tops when putting them in the bags. I used it the most to pull her out of the garage when my battery was dead. I still have it i bought it new some years ago it is stainless it might be missing some of the hardware if you want it i would sell it for fifty bucks.

Hi,
I put a luggage rack on my 71 shortly after I bought it.
I liked it then, but never even considered putting it back on while restoring the car.
Regards,
Alan
