NOO!! Cause mine is an 8 point mount & willfit both once I,m done with the with the [can't tell I had a l had a luggage rack on the car]. I like the look without the rack but I like the functunality of the rack. I've had this rack for over 15 years and it's still a work in process. Got the bike rack working. Get alotta comments on that. When I get both working together I'll show some picts . I'm setting the 9-car up so I can take a 3 month trip to go see the Pacific. Loading the bike, going to Road America to see the Tudor Series Race Sunday. It's 6 hour enduro on a 4.1 mile track with 14 turns. The second oldest road track in America. Est. in 1955? T

my 70 LT-1 has a factory rack, don't like it but wasn't a deal breaker when I bought car. patching holes up when removing rack usually over time they show through paint

I have a 76 that has the rubber plugs in the holes. I hate the plugs there, but I hate not having the rack on to cover the plugs. I think if I didn't have the holes already I would not put the rack on it. I kind of like the looks of the rack at the sametime I don't. It is almost like what ever floats your boat that day, yes or no, do I or don't I.

Both the 68 and 69 use the same rack. Where did you purchase the rack? Or, is it "Original?"

I am brand new to the Vette world. I've surveyed this site, but still cannot come up with a definite answer, though I have an idea. My 70 has what I think to be 4 holes on the rear deck for a luggage rack (not 6 holes, not 8 holes). The holes are 41" apart, outside to outside. Not 38 1/2" apart, like the luggage racks at Ecklers. What is the deal? I realize that in 1970, the logger racks were a dealer installed item, so who knows what rack the dealer might have used? Or, one of the owners may have installed it, so who knows which one they installed? It may have been a luggage rack from a later model? I really don't want to put a rack back on it, but hear the bad stories, that the repairs on the luggage rack holes often do let last because the fiberglass repair shrinks. I feel like I HAVE to put a luggage rack back on. Who knows about a Vette luggage rack that is 41" apart? Talk to me, plz!

Hi RR,
During the early 70s the rack the Chevrolet dealer installed was more than likely the GM rack. At that time it had 6 'legs' and the outer holes were 38-1/2" apart.
I don't think you "HAVE" to put the rack back on.
The holes in the deck can be successfully repaired if the hole is 'v'd' out on each side of the fiberglass and the repair done ENTIRELY with resin and fiberglass mat.
The holes will often 'telegraph' their existence if the 'v's' aren't done properly and some kind of filler is used in the repair.

While I know from doing glass work that the holes can be repaired and never come back to haunt I would rather have ghost holes than the rack function or not ruins a look in my eyes,

But a question, were racks dealer only or a factory thing too?

Racks were a dealer installed item only. You could list them on the order sheet when adding options on your new car, along with other items like spot light, first aid kit, compass, maybe even a tissue holder.

Thanks, guys, but I am still trying to figure out which luggage rack was put on the Vette I am now restoring. The holes were 41" apart, outside to outside. It had to be a larger luggage rack. The holes on the ones on Ecklers is 38 1/2" apart.

I'm doing away with my rack, not only because my car is a 'Vette and not a station wagon, but also the gas filler door rubs it. Bent rack, or not installed correctly? Who knows, but it goes.

For the record, the second picture in Alan's post above was my car when delivered in 2007. The rack was removed and the holes repaired shortly thereafter.

I didn't recognize it with the hardtop. Google said CF but I didn't try to follow it.
That was some rack!
I can imagine you're glad it's gone.
The holes from my rack have been filled for more than 10 years too. While my car lives a pretty easy life there's no sign of them either…. and it's acrylic lacquer.

My '72 came with a rack. If it didn't I wouldn't add one but I don't think having it detracts at all from the look of the car.

I have a '68 coupe with a stainless steel dealer installed rack from back on delivery day.
Although, I had no opinion on it either way when I purchased the car, I have come to find useful ways to employ it.
When I remove my T-tops I usually lay the black covers open on the rack and use the rack to assist me with sliding each top into the cases.
This prevents a drop on the ground.
Working on the back of the car I have a large piece of cardboard that fits on the rack for lying light items like tools or cleaning products.
A properly installed 6 point rack should allow ease of opening the fuel cap lid. If its off that's another issue.
Guess it depends how closely the installer followed the template if such an animal existed back in '68?

I thought the only draw back of the rack for me was that if I ever wanted to install an AC cobra style Monza flip up fuel cap it's probably not possible with a rack installed.

I also have an optional "me installed" GM passenger side OEM mirror.
It sure beats neck snap every time I change lanes.

A compass and a tissue holder might be over kill
I will admit to buying at a vintage store an era correct spot light that plugs into my cigarette lighter. Its not GM but 60's era.
I actually will use it if I encounter a roadside problem coming home from a cruise night.
As for the tissue holder I still use my sleeve.
And with GPS today a compass would be almost obsolete unless it was in a woody.
