As I am getting closer and closer to starting my 75' coupe for the first time in a few years, I have decided to replace the stock air cleaer set up for an after market open filter style. What size base would be appropriate? Would a base designed to work with a carburator with a 5 1/8 in diameter work? Also, how much drop does the stock air cleaner assembly have?
Why? Your stock set up is fine for a daily driver.
I know that it is, and to be honest, it was my intent to use it. The engine has undergone some changes, both cosmetic and mechanical, and the stock set up just isn't doing if for me. I have gone to a full roller set up, aluminum heads, aluminum intake, tall valve covers etc. With all of that, the stock set up is not as aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, the tall valve covers have changed the geometry for the breather tube. I like the stock 68-71 set up, but I'm not sure how that would stack up with after market products from a cost comparison perspective.

Holly ( HLY-64280 ) HI-Tek air cleaner is a neat addition to your set-up, a bit pricey at $300 but is what I am leaning to putting on my 75.
Are you sure air is drawn in from the cowl ? My 75 has two air intakes into the air cleaner and does not draw air from the cowl as did the 1974 .
Unless someone has changed your hood, all 73-75 Corvettes all used the same hood, with the fresh air system.
The 75 air cleaner has dual snorkels, but it also has a small lid that just covers the filter. The base is open between the filter and the sides of the base, and has a ring on it that a seal is installed on. When closed, the hood seals to the air cleaner. Under acceleration, a flap opens at the back of the hood, feeding cool air to the carb. During cold start, idle and low throttle conditions, the carb gets air through the air cleaners 2 snorkels. The rest of the time, air is fed to the carb through the hood.
Not sure what type of air intake system you have now, what ever you do, I'd stick with a fresh air intake in front of the radiator as an upgrade. I go through this with lot's of trouble on my cars, and well worth the effort on hot, summer days.

As alway, thanks for any and all help.

Q1. Size base depends on the carb - measure it.
Q2. Is the carb 5 1/8? if not then measure it.
Q3. Drop - measure the stock base.
You can use a 14" drop base on the stock Qjet. I used to have 3" filter.
If you DON'T have the cowl induction hood, or it has been replaced with something else you might want to use silly putty or clay and measure the clearance between the new air cleaner and the bottom of the hood.
I went back to the stock air cleaner and the cowl induction setup.
