Default Bored with Hot Rod and Chevy High Performance

I'm seriously considering letting both subscriptions expire. My 'iron' has 0% billet anything, the suspension dates to 1963 and the drivetrain that I have modified may put out 320hp/380tq. All of the cars I read about that are featured are built by name brand 'shops' and I see less and less 'builder' cars. I remember reading about cars built by 'Lil' John Buttera' and the likes but now, the builders have acronyms for names. And, the hp and tq numbers make my brain numb.

Perhaps I need to subscribe to a slower, 'rod' mag than these mainstream rags.

Who has $10K to spend on an engine?

I let my Hot Rod subscription expire last fall, among other reasons due in part to their ignorance exhibited during the lightened Corvette fiasco. As for CHP, they've had so few articles which interested me that I never did subscribe in the first place. Except for a few hardcore racing titles, IMHO the selection of auto-enthusiast mags has gotten pretty poor, so I now only pick up individual mags when content warrants the purchase.

I've been buying CHP since it was only sold in stores and I'm thinking of dropping my subscription for the same reasons.I guess I'll just have to read my old mags,it's cheaper and I know how the stories end.

My brother has a '97 'vette with a few billet parts, and he wants more. He subscribes to both Hot Rod and CHP. I have an '80 'vette built using junkyard parts, and I subscribe to Car Craft and Popular Hotrodding. I think that says something.

I agree. And it seems that everyone is so hot on the latest and greatest LS engine stuff, not much applies to us old guys that (a), have no desire to go thru that upgrade, or (b) don't have a gazillion dollars to throw into it.

I've been a long time Car Craft reader. They seem to be a little more blue collar, and I love the articles on using junkyard/swap meet parts. That being said, they seem to be slipping a little. Too much using their articles to "advertise" products. I don't know how to bolt on a supercharger or suspension kit, they'll come with their own instructions.

Dropped all my auto mags 5 years ago, most of what they had was high dollar stuff and very little DIY.

Dropped my subscriptions a few years ago as well. How dare they put the odd article in an advertising magazine.

Yeah, I have noticed that, too, especially PHR. They'll say something like "We used a Miller model blah-blah-blah to weld the rollbar......", and then go on for a long paragraph about how awesome the Miller welder is, blatant product placement. I can live with it if it doesn't get much worse.

Thanks all. I am going to let them expire. If I need info, I'll get it here or in my repair manuals.

AMEN to all of the above. I started subscribing to Hot Rod in 1959. What they write about just isn't hot rodding any more.

I probably should have dropped them long ago when I found myself looking at the cover and seeing there wasn't anything of interest inside and not opening the mag at all.

A once a month or more trip to a Barnes & Noble or the like will do it.
Plus even when and article is of interest many times it will be available on line shortly after the magazine hits the news stand.

I have a 65 442. Try finding articles about an early 400 cu in Oldsey, or a Junk-Away 2 speed trans. Well, at least it is an A body.

I gave up magazines years ago...too expensive, take up valuable space in the shop, everything repeated every few months (how to build a small block chevy)
Everything i need or want is searchable on my garage pc (Google, you tube, online forums etc) and you can even watch live webcasts from time to time http://www.ihra.com/livewebcast/

Have internet forums replaced the car rags? I don't know where my car would be without the inspiration and ideas from this forum.

Although I did get the idea to paint my Sporty with rolled on Rustoleum from a Hot Rod article...
