No other alteration will bring more rewards then installing an O/D automatic in a car with a original 3sp automatic .

My car even on rural roads hits 4th and my ZZ430 clone quiets down so much cell phone use is comfortable. It has to be the best mod with returns that go way beyond MPG.

the 82 is my "dd" and of course has the 700r4 which is great, doing
80 mph I am turing 2000 rpm's, lesser speeds = lesser r's.
And I enjoy driving the Vette no matter where, and especially on the highway which is most of my daily commute.

Sorry, Have no Idea where your coming from.

Did not buy a vette for gas milage, and just to prove it I put in a big block. I did not buy a vette for peace and quiet, and just to prove it I put in a big block and added sidepipes aannd left in the 3 speed.

I bought a vette cause there is no substitute.

can someone enlighten me with the 4speed vs 5 speed trans? I realy don't get it - if they both have only one OD gear how is the swap any good for gas millage or noise?

I hate driving mine above 50mph - the loud gear drive is a pain in the *** as well (damn bubba!), so I cycle between 3rd and neutral...

If I had an extra $2k 200r4 would go in right away!

PS. what is the lowest OD ratio available for custom trannies? they all seem to oscillate around .7 ... I wonder why? is there some kind of limit why a .3 couldn't be made?

If you have a carb your motor would buck and stutter and shake you right out the driver seat witn a .3 OD

4spd manual is not an overdrive trans. it has a 1:1 ratio The TKO600 is a .64:1 ratio. RPM drops 36% from 4th to 5th. Mileage goes up and noise goes down.

I don't disagree that I wouldn't prefer a little less RPMs, but I really don't know that it does any harm to the engine. You don't think twice about running a 350, 427, or 454 boat engine at crazy RPMs for extended periods of time....

I would prefer blast up back roads, but if I need to go on the interstate, that is OK too.

All 74 cars got bad mileage new emission standards that year they tried everything to meet them, performance and mileage went out the window. My C3 autos all got bad mileage 30% less than same year 4 speeds.

Probably closer to 30.

The reason I say that is your entire life has been mainly in cars with overdrive transmissions and are used to the extremely low revving engines of OD transmissions.

Remember, until 1975, highways were typically 65, 70, 75, and even 80 mph depending on the location. Some areas had NO speed limit (reasonable & proper).

You aren't hurting it.
BINGO!

Way back when, I had a '77 Pontiac Trans Am with a 4 speed manual,3.23:1 rear axle gears, and a 27" OD tire. At 65 MPH, I was looking at 2600 RPM, IIRC. My wife had a '79 C-3, and although I didn't positively know what the rear gear was, I suspect it was 3.55:1, as that car turned 27-2800 RPM at 65 MPH.

Before my 5spd swap, (before 2006) I thought nothing of cruising 4,000 rpm on the highway... longest runs were 6 hours to visit my brother in Charlotte.. .and even then I didn't want to get out of the car once I got there... just wanted more...

PS - I got 65,000 hard miles out of that motor (ZZ4 crate motor) before dropping a valve from too much above 6,000 rpm high jinks one night... 3,000 to 4,000 rpms all day long wont hurt a thing as long as the fuel mixture is right.

My 69 has 4:11 w/ original M-21 and sidepipes. Turns 2800 at 45mph. Just ordered my TKO600 today. Hoping for about 2200rpms at 65mph or so. I can't wait...

Notice the license plate!

I don't worry about the gas mileage and enjoy the sound of the pipes. The radio is worthless as you can't hear it.

A 200-4r can be picked up used and rebuilt for half that cost.

As far as overdrive ranges, a T56 six speed manual has a .5 6th gear. But it is a not quite "bolt in". I picked one up myself for 2000 dollars, and got the car that it came in with it...

Curve, thanks for reply, THe t56 would be sweet with the 0.50 OD but I heard that the pedal space is pretty tight in manual applications? (never had a chance to sit in a manual C3) I do fine in a large Benz with a stick but I have 15Extra Wide shoe size so it might be a problem

Just drove my 1980 4/speed from Charlotte NC to see my family in Savannah, Georgia. About 600 miles round trip and she handled awesome. It was such a great feeling taken the tops off on Saturday(65 degree day) and hitting the highway. I made a great playlist on my Ipad, put the earphones on and headed south. Even though I have headrs and side pipes I was not bothered by the low hummm coming from the 380hp rebuild. This type of trip is good for me mentally and physically for my car. The wife had other plans for the weekend so I was on my own. I just returned home, and even though it rained on my return trip, my 80 still handled great. Lots of looks and waves along the way was an added bonus. Can't wait to do it again. Spring is almost here. Now I have to go and get to scrubbing.
