Default What year is this removable rear window tray???

Howdy gang,
I'd love to be able to specify with certainy the year of the removable rear window tray I'm selling over in parts. Mooser brought it to my attention that it wasn't a 1972 like the window I purchased with it. And the thread there (sorry I don't recall who) stated that it wasn't a 1968, because of the polished metal edge and slightly different dimensions, so is it a 1969,1970, or 1971.

As always your expertise is greatly appreciated.

I don`t think it`s a 1971, because mine has an "X" molded in between the holes, like this....

Hi S,
I think you have a 69/70 tray.
Fiberboard material, 9 slots, highly polished... (it looks like)... strip riveted to its front edge.
The 68 tray was the same except that the strip was either painted black or left natural (but unpolished).
The 71/72 trays were molded black fiberglass.
Regards,
Alan

Not a 72 also, the one I have came out of a 72 and it has a push button release.

Thanks OldGTO and Alan,

Much appreciated. Now I can advertise it appropriately.

Trust me when I say, the 69 tray is shorter than the 68 tray... by about an inch. It won't reach the latch in a 68 no matter what you do. The first tray I bought was from another forum member's original 69 coupe, didn't work. Bought another 68 tray with a black strip on ebay after requesting dimensions from the seller and finding out that it was an inch or so longer, just what I needed to fit properly in my 68. I had both the 68 tray and the 69 tray on my pool table, it looks identical except the 69 was cut shorter.

One other notable difference is that on the 68 tray the metal strip was mounted on the bottom of the tray with the rivets coming in from the top. The 69 tray was the opposite, the strip was on the top with the rivets coming in from the bottom. I completely restored and reflocked my 68 tray, and when I mounted the strip I mounted it the way the 69 was with the rivets coming in from bottom. It seemed to work better with the latch...

Also the 68 hinges had the linkage in them, I found it to be much better than the 69 hinge with the single pivot because it tucked the tray up much better in the compartment... you can't even see it.

Thanks again mooncricket... I had no idea there were differences in any of the four years. So 69 or 70?

I believe you can correctly advertise it as a '69,'70 style rear window storage shelf.

I would venture to say 69 definitely and 70 very possibly based on my experience.

By the way, I spent a ton of time repairing all the cracks with glue and sawdust and sanding it all smooth, removed all the hardware and refinished/redipped everything, MADE the special rivets for the clips in my 102 year old Hendey lathe, and made rivet setting tools to match the OEM look... and then reflocked the the top with the stuff you get from JanDer.

It looks incredibly good and original and I think anybody who goes through the extra effort to restore one of these will be very satisfied with the result. I wanted people to look at my car and think WOW, this guy really went the extra mile on this one... The only thing I'm missing is the correct 68 latch, but I have an idea on how to make one that looks correct.

the removable rear windows were only available from 68-72. I have a 77, bought all of the required parts and did the conversion.

Here's what it looks like:

Interesting
Alan had a pic a while ago that showed the 71 with everything like yours (and my 72) except without the push button latch hole. Still had the old style latch.
Was the change to the push button a mid-year 71 item?

What date was the 71 that has this?

Alan, your in this thread, that one you had is it a later date?

I'm seeing 4 different trap-doors so far
68 (longer than a 69)
69-70 perhaps the one in this thread
71 (Alan's style without the push button)
72 with the button
No wonder they stopped making them after 4 years (well that and Duntov hating the buffeting)

My 71 is considered an "early" car when I order parts for it, and the tray has the push button latch. I don`t know when the latch style changed. I`m pretty sure it`s original to the car, as we`re the 3rd owner, and it had just over 100,000 miles on it.

Hi gto,
What's your 71's vin sequence?
Mine is a mid-January build car... 6589.
The vins run low in the beginning of 71 production because of no cars being built in October and only about 450 in November.
Remember though, early/late has to do with when the part changed, not with when the car was built
Regards,
Alan

Mine is 120085, and the trim tag shows build date as June 22nd. Maybe not as "early" as I thought? From when to when was the production run for that year?

Alan / OldGTO
What PN does the 71 AIM give for that tray?
(And for the window?)
