Default outter door handle removal - help please

I'm trying to replace the outter door handles on my '74.....I got the 7/16" nuts off but how do I disconnect the rod/shaft that's still holding it? There is a clip on it but I don't want to break it.....how do I get that clip off?

Thanks for any help and maybe pics too......!

It has been a while but I think I would remove the bottom clip and pull it up as an assembly. I think it would be easier that way.

I think you can slip behind that clip and pull it off of the rod, I have some small 90 degree angled 'picks' that helped me lots.

I think you can also buy a spring kit to keep the door handle from sagging, it keeps it up close, nice and tight.

You cant remove the top clip.

Look at post #2 showing the aim.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...e-problem.html

Especially numbers 5 & 6 & clip in the right pic. As you can see the clip slides in place.

What you want to do is slide the clip about 1/16". Do not push it so far that it falls off. Get a flathead screwdriver (this is what I used) and push it. Then you can pop the barrel out. The barrel has that shaft that goes into the clip.

Once removed if you can reach in there and pull the clip back toward you all the way. Then when you drop the rod down, just press the barrel into the hole and it will lock in place.

Dont move the barrel up or down the shaft otherwise you will need to make adjustments. Assuming it worked fine before.

Click on the pics and you can get a better view, the 6th will show and explain what you need to do:

Good luck. Took me a long time to do my first one.

Let me know how it goes, I need to do mine but I've been putting it off as I've heard it's a bitch of a job!
Apparently , small hands and lots of patience is needed... I have neither!
