I was hoping you were going to get the #2,000!

I've been at the hospital all day until 9 pm with my father-in-law.....so the car didn't get touched/I wasn't able to buy the adhesives, fillers, cloth, etc.

I like your idea of the second way. However you think the parts should be is OK with me/it doesn't matter if it's one piece or three pieces.......What ever is easiest to put in a cardboard box.

Since I know NOTHING about fiberglass work I spent the last two days reading thru all the threads in the PAINT/BODY sub-forum on the subject of fiberglass repair.

Now I have three headaches

According to the info, it also looks as though I will need an entire day to remove all the "1/2" thick stuff" that was used by the P.O's body shop to bond the '76 tail light clip to the deck/quarterpanels.

Oh well................................prac tice/practice/......etc.

Can't just line everything up close and make it work?
Pics in post 1969,73 and 79 look good enough to me, but I'm no expert by any means, just trying to save some humpwork.

The alignment is good. We are just trying to get the back side correct so when tony sticks the stuff on, it stays...

And on the other end of the car...these are the first pieces pulled from the mold. I have some flaws i am gonna try to fill. Also gonna try with cloth for first layer to see if it'll sit deeper in the mold.

ALMOST! NORMALLY......that would be the plan.

On the tail light clip I have everything very close and flush.....about 15 more minutes of trimming should do it........

HOWEVER................................. ..............

The problem I found is that a body shop "smeared" adhesive and cloth 1/2" thick and 6 inches wide across the underside of the deck and quarter panels where they met the '76 tail light clip in order to bond it to the deck.......it is 3/8" TOO thick for the new bonding strip to lay flat against the underside of the deck......you can see the thickness in the pic (remember when I thought that I had cut the bonding flange aloose....it was actually "gobs of adhesive mixed with fiberglass mat"

Also.....when I wedged a gasket-scraping tool under the edges of the "bonding strip" described above.....I can pop the "bonding strip" aloose in several places.

ALL of that "junk" has to be removed so a real bonding strip can be glued to the underside of the deck and quarter panels.

NOW......about the 1970 donor tail light clip.....it is completely original....no "junk" adhesive has been added to the underside of it. It is about 5/32" thick----an original body part.

I will prep it for bonding first today since it will be the easiest piece to deal with.....and to gain some experience with cleaning/ bonding.

Try a heat gun. That is how they seperate panels. Especially since you can heat the goop side instead of the good side. Slip a wood chisel between and heat the goop.

Eckler's has a couple of fiberglass videos that used to be in book form. The book, no longer in publication, initially sold for maybe $20 or so but now goes for some serious $ to show how popular it was/is. The DVD's are excellent. Believe it or not, fiberglass repair is not difficult and I found it actually fun to do.

Thanks Men! He's 88 years old....so even anesthesia is a challenge for him......surgery starts in 15 minutes....doctor doesn't know how long/1 hour to 3 hours depending on the number of blockages in his legs and if they can control the situation during surgery.

Excerpt from page 1 of this thread:

Doorgunner's '68 Project; NOTE: When I started this thread, I had no idea of what life had in store...so this is turning into more than a build-thread.
