Cannot reinstall 1976 fuel tank, help!
I removed the gas tank in my 1976 stingray and replaced the sending unit. It was easy to remove the tank but now when I try and lift the tank back into position I cant seem to do it. I can not seat the rear of the tank on the rear cross member. The lip of the cross member his the tank and it seems to me that I don't have enough room to wiggle it in place.

It came out, it'll go back in.

Did you put in new straps? The replacement straps are stiffer and much harder to form around the tank so the tank has a hard time sitting in the right spot.

Removed the fuel tank from the 70. It was not easy to remove..I'd already removed the exhaust pipes, spare tire carrier, etc. it was just a matter of getting the tank out. I had to struggle twist and turn to get it out. The anti-flow valve in the upper driver's side of the tank was a major source of interference. The"anti-flow valve" prevents gasoline from flowing to the vapor recovery canister in the front of the car, if the car is upside down.
Agree, with the previous post...if you got it out, you should be able to get it back in.
.....BTW...since you haven't been able to replace the tank..this may be a blessing in disguise. I don't think you should be replacing such an old tank. For a little over $200 you can replace the tank with a factory duplicate Quanta tank. It has the original factory stampings and is tin plated. May not have the rubber bladder, which you can probably do without.
Escalating the replacement scenario. Theoretically, you can easily remove the *4 and #3 body mounting bolts. This should allow you to easily jack up the back of the body by perhaps 1/2" to 1" which may be enough clearance. I say theoretically since the #4 body mount bolt can be difficult to remove. The #4 has a steel nut catcher that's riveted to the body with aluminum rivets. With corrosion, the aluminum rivets are weakened, and when you try to torque #4, the rivets shear and the nut catcher spins so you can't unscrew the#4 body mount bolt.

Ecklers is good.. but if you order the tank from Ecklers, it's still going to come from Quanta. Bought two tanks from Quanta..68 and 70. They are duplicates of factory originals. I'd guess they are made from factory original tooling.

It took me about an hour but I got mine back in. I needed a second set of hands. I ended up using my hands and my head to hold everything in place.
I've got a '76 too.
