Why a Corvette? And specifically, a C-3?

In 1982, I was a senior in college about to graduate with an engineering degree. I test drove a slightly used Red on red 1981 Corvette but just couldn't figure out how I could afford it but I never forgot that car. Last yea, after waiting 31 years, I finally bought it - identical car to the one I test drove in 1982.

The C3 was designed using the formula 36-24-36. No other Corvette in history, much less any other flavor has duplicated those voluptuous body lines so accurately. If I didn't know better I'd say the Big Guy himself had a hand in it...Oh, and ever since I seen one in the late 60's I've only dreamed of having one. Now, 40 years later the dream has came true. What I didn't think would happen was my wife being jealous of the time spend with my new lady. Maybe I should have moved to Utah before I brought more than one gal into the home...

A couple years ago, I was looking for anything with a 4speed. Wasn't really interested in a C3 corvette, until I sat behind the wheel for a test drive. Didn't even mind the 10mpg from south of Daytona, Fl. to Charleston, SC. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Bill

Sit in a early C3, look out over the steering wheel at that view, if that alone does nothing, you are in the wrong car.
Forgo the power, looks, sound, on lookers at shows, ease of maintenance (its a chevy), rareity, really super fun to drive, etc.
The new vettes get very little attention at car shows because you still see them everywhere like a toyota. I asked my friend who also has a 68 why he drives it much more than his new vette...." it has 8 computers in it....and my 68 is a love affair everytime I look over that hood".

Ya know 68L79.... that really strikes a note... the sitting behind the wheel and the view...when i read your comment...it really reminds me of the view from both seats..and then at night as the pull up lights ..change the view some...that fender coming down to meet the headlight...
ALSO.... looking in the side view mirror and seeing the "swoopy" rear fender...and the chrome push in door handle...
man i love the C3's....

I am 50 but have had a vette since I was 30. I did not get the 68 until I was on my 2nd vette, a 99 daily driver.
The C3 was the cool car for styling when I was in high school. The 68-69 were older than that time frame for me, but were always my favorite. I have always loved good old V8 power from the big 3. The first few years of the C3 have always been the most beautiful cars to my eye, and thankfully, there was still good power and performance.

" Objects in rear view mirror are about to dissappear"
I agreed....Mine was very fast in the early 70's when you could buy real gas.
I ordered the ad....
When it came in, it was about 24X40, a very nice ad. The caption was missing and I was really dissapointed....still have it and need to take it to my sign friend and have him add the caption and hang it up.
Just another reason to love the C3....

I was 9-years-old in 1980 (the year of my Vette). That car was my first experience with the word "lust"... I didn't grow up wrenching, but I did have numerous car books and posters- all Vettes. I told my Dad I would have a Corvette before a wife... That plan didn't quite come to fruition, but I finally got the car I wanted. Is it easy to work on? No. Do I know what I'm doing? No, but I'm learning. Was it worth the wait? Hell yes.

Why a Corvette? Especially a C3. All you C3 owners go out into your garage and take a long hard look and then sit behind the wheel. - you will then know the answer to the OP's question. IMO there is not a sexier looking car out there. Always draws attention. Love the lines and the curves.

I'm a chevy head and love 427s and 4spds. I don't care if it's in a school bus. It's still a 427!!! Now you put the 427 and 4spd in a lite car makes it even better.
When i was 18 i moved to Watsonville Ca. I had a 66 gmc with a real lt1 and a 4spd Muncie. One day I found a beat 71 454 4spd roadster so I asked if was for sale and they said no but they would trade for my gmc. I'm 18 so what heck do you think I did. I drove that car for yrs and beat the HE77 out of it. Then I found a 55 chevy gasser. I always wanted a 55 chevy like the one in two lane black top. Hence my user name. I finally got a 55 and while it was great fun it just didn't handle well enough for me.
You hit a point in life when you look back and want a car of your youth or a car of yr you were born. Then I found my Vette and just had to have it. I was born oct 30 1969 and my Vette was born nov 3 1969. So I think it's a keeper. Plus it has a 427 and 4spd!!

As a kid, I loved Speed Racer's 'Mach 5'!!!
C3: Love the lines, the curves, the long front end, the gills of the '69, I wouldn't change a thing, well, except the vacuum system .

Growing up, my father had a silver anniversary edition. I would go out into the garage and sit in it. The thing that always went through my mind…wow, those fenders are so cool looking! He sold it and it was like an empty hole had been opened up inside. HAD to have one ever since. Asked for a corvette and a drum set every christmas with no luck.
The lines on the C3s are racy, yet sexy at the same time. You can look at any muscle car and enjoy it but the C3 body is the one that people at car shows take an extra minute or two to examine. The C3 screams side pipes and for me, the chrome bumpers on the earlier ones keep that classy muscle/show quality look going.
I love all the generations for all kinds of different reasons. The C3 is the one that seems to have captured me.

I figured that this question would be a good one to ask people about why they choose the Vette over other cars. Is it the look? Is it name? Is it just sentimentality, or the dreaded mid-life crisis. What is it about the Vette that spins your wheels. I'm not asking how you got it just why you got it?
I for one love the Vette for a number of reasons but my main one is that since I first became a car guy I have always wanted a Vette. Throughout the years I have seen them change and I still like them all but the C-3 is the one that I picture in my head whenever the name Corvette comes to mind.
Also the view from the drivers seat is unlike any other car.

Few years past and along came C3 s, older friends uncle passes away , left him money, so the kid buys a new 1970 C3 with his inheritance ...blue coupe...I'm dying by now .
Then I drove a BLACK 69 427 BB 4spd coupe with side pipes when I was 16 , I test drove it , the car shook like crazy from the torque as it idled....what a lope on that cam...Loud , had a huge Holley on it , gas n oil....the smells of hi test gas......OMG....it was heaven . To me it was a race car.
Dad wouldn't let me trade my Camaro for it....he was wise ..I'm here today
But it was too late .....C3 from 19 years old till today still runnin em

69 corvette stingray is my dream car, always has been, can't tell you why but it just is. Maybe it's the 427 4 speed coupe with those body lines, maybe the sound of side pipes, I don't know, but I haven't given up on that dream. Bought and daily drove a 69 camaro my senior year of high school, it was loud and quick. Sold it a few years back and invested the money to one day get that special vette. I spent the next year looking with no luck, couple of years later after starting the search again and giving up I decided to get a C4 and make a drift car. Just one month after giving in to the drift car idea, I botched a craiglist search and stumbled on a 68 coupe project that was local ( 6 miles down the road, and never knew it was there ), within my bounds of mechanical abilities. It's an A/C small block, auto, with pop out rear window. Soon to be a ratted 4 speed that I can call my own. That's my story, not all of it but it's the most important stuff that has lead me here to the forum with all its great members.
