Default Fly wheel

Where is the best place in CT (hartford area) to have a fly wheel turned?

Usually, any competent machine shop can resurface it.

I assume to true it up? Or should it be balanced also to any specification?

350? You can get it checked, but not necessary. Ext balance, leave it alone.

resurfacing grinds away micro-cracks & heat-spots also levels it ... any auto OR heavy-truck Machine shop

OE external balance flywheels' counterweights are on back of flywheel ... resurface those same as OE internal/neutral balance flywheels

While the flywheel is off, carefully check the starter or ring gear for chipped or rounded teeth. If suspect, change out the gear. They are easy to change at this point. Jerry

350 is internally balanced, not external.

For the OP, send an PM to Gary Ramadie (GTR1999). He is New Haven and should be able to tell you of a good local place.

OE 1-pc rms 350 (~86' - up) flexplate & flywheel has a counterweight but damper does not ... that began mid-run of C4 series ... lotta C3 these days have later blocks

OE C3 are 2-pc rms and true internal / neutral balance

Dang, forgot about the 1-piece rear main seal blocks. I have always had two piece seals. Of course, any engine can be internally balanced with the right amount of work. My 496 is internally balanced.

I doubt that he has the equipment to do them but I am sure he is dialed into the local machine shop network.

Hi Steve
I don't have a grinder for flywheels but I used Norlor Clutch in Hamden. I think they might have moved though since I had to have a clutch balanced and flywheel ground. They were good $30 to grind a flywheel and install a ring gear on it, now that was a while ago.

That is a good price. I just paid $80 here in Orlando for resurfacing and a ring gear (including cost of ring gear). Then, the new clutch was out of spec so another $20 to resurface again.

Well that was a long time ago during a period when automotive machine shops were common, grinding flywheels common, and the cost to do business in CT was under control. Your dollar was worth a lot more 15-20 years ago then today.

Our present and last governor killed manufacturing and the middle class by taxing them out of business or just by moving out of state. You were very smart to leave this area when you did. While I still love it here it's not getting any better and we really haven't recovered as much as other states since 2008.

Here's another reason ... you can buy a Brand NEW OE-type replacement flywheel with ring gear for $65 - $90.
