Default Frame paint

I am planning a body off restoration and I am wondering what people have using for frame paint. Also, it is my understanding that the frame is a satin to semi gloss finish.

Paint finish depends on whether you are staying with a factory finish (do an internet "search").......... or not (the finish is your choice)

As for the quality of paint, you can DIY it.......or have it painted....

with anything from Rustoleum to powder coating.

I believe Eastwood sells a chassis paint. I powdercoated mine.

I used two-stage urethane paint on mine and it's held up pretty well, but if I was going to do it again, I would powdercoat it.

Hi 7007,
I had my frame powder coated in semi-gloss.
I then sanded it with 400 grit paper and painted it it with Krylon #1613.
This allowed me to get a variation in the level of gloss on different parts of the frame and is also easy to touch up as needed.
Regards,
Alan

If you seek authenticity, consider adding the effects of weather. Frames were stock piled outside the building at St. Louis. It is very possible your new frame was rained or snowed on before being brought inside the building and delivered to the chassis line.

I used POR-15. I also blocked off all of the holes in the frame rails and threw a quart in each one. Sloshed it around for about 45 minutes (throwing it around your lawn on a hot Florida summer day is great exercise!) and pretty well covered the inside of the rails too.

Powder coat is the only way to go will look like new for several times longer than paint. It seals the cracks to prevent rust from creeping out. You can paint over it as Alan stated for a correct restoration.

I like that fact that you called it a "Body Off" restoration. I can never figure why anyone would use the term "Frame Off".

Anywho... I powder coated my frame and I love it. Wasn't expensive either. I used Eastwood's Semi-Gloss chassis paint on the snadblasted suspension parts; it's a really close match.

I agree with you. "Body off" is correct. "Frame Off" is a corruption of "off the frame."

As learned here by Alan 71, it would depend on the year of your car. Earlier (pre 72?) methods used an asphalt coating that was not too heavily applied. It wipes off easily with mild scrubbing, using simple green, don't ask.........

Hi,
I'm thinking the change from an asphalt based coating to an enamel based paint occurred for 70 model year?
Regards,
Alan

When you send your frame off to be blasted did you get it back prior to powder coating? I was thinking there may be spots you want smoothed out or do you just get it blasted and coated all at once?

Wow! What a nice neat garage.

That rolling chassis is almost too nice to put the body on
