Which is best. Will be raising car for some length of time. Putting jackstands under frame or putting wheels and tires on blocks to raise the car???? This will be engine and drivetrain work

I vote for 6 jackstands, secure and no chance of rolling off.

I agree, jackstands. I use four large ones (6,000 lb) rating. Also, it's far easier to scoot around, with the tires off the car as well. Let me add, that if you're going to jack it up high (over 18"), you should do it in two stages. First jack up all the corners to the lowest height of the jackstands and then with all the jackstands in place, you can then raise the car higher. I feel this puts a lot less stress and twisting on the car and also a less radical angle on the other jackstands.

You need two to support the front of the frame where the engine rests, or over a short time the front sags and opens the door gap at the top while pinching it off at the bottom.

I would cast a vote to put it up on its wheels if you are not doing suspension work. This works out for me well since it is high enough to get under, but low enough I can get in over the top. I just feel better about it since it can't go anywhere, and it is resting on its wheels like it normally does. I have jack stands for when the wheels come off but feel more comfortable under the car like this.

Jack Stands!!!

Having the tires stationary for an extended period can cause permanent deformation in the tire belting. This can make the tires impossible to balance and have to be replaced.

When using 6 jack stands, where do you place the 2 front ones?

I use 12ton jackstands. Plenty of room to work under the car
