Interesting post Kid Vette. It seems your point is somehow getting lost with others though. Thanks for the history lesson.

His "Kid Vette" point being that hash marks on c3's are some new trend never used on ( vintage ) racing vettes?
Or did I miss it really badly?

jim lockwood said it rather well...
"In my opinion, someone in GM Styling (and maybe Marketing) failed to do their homework before they decided to apply those stripes."

Here's a link to the thread over in C1 & C2 where I lifted some info presented here. A few more details in the actual thread: Grand Sport I.D. (Slash) Marks on the Fenders

After scanning that thread which it would seem real vintage racers and or c2 owners poke more fun at hash marks than I do...I see...

Jim Lockwood:
"Otherwise, the only cars on which one sees hash marks in period photos are Cobras"

So is the point hash marks are a basically newer trend perpetuated by GM using them on a c6 style/option package geared more towards selling cars than any real connections to the orginal c2 grand sport or any GM racer for that matter and if anything hash marks are far more a "FORD" thing than GM.....

The 1996 C4 Grand Sport had hash marks, so the look has been around officially for nearly 20 years. Nearly everything on a Vette is geared toward selling cars.

Many times companies can have big marketing blunders,

jim lockwood said it rather well...
"In my opinion, someone in GM Styling (and maybe Marketing) failed to do their homework before they decided to apply those stripes."

Hash marks used as a marketing strategy 20 years ago still doesn't give them some huge kinship to vintage racing,
But it does instill my point only a c6 grand sport should be wearing them, I feel that way more-so with this thread.

I would love to hear what people would say if I asked them,

So...you have hash marks on your fender, just what do those mean or represent.

Honestly, when you bought the GS did you think the marks has historic meaning?

That is the best use of hash marks I have seen yet,
Add a NOS and STP decal and it will get you 5 more HP...

Here we go, Designer printed duct tape for that one of a kind, set your self apart from the rest of the hash mark crowd custom touch...

You heard about right here first, and special thanks to jkippin for this smokin' cool idea....

Although, I'd wager having a set of hound's-tooth hash marks would be a big hit on game day down in Tuscaloosa...

Default Modern hashmarks

the modern hashmarks from say c5r to present are not there for looks, Corvette racing team sometimes used European drivers, where they drive on right side of the car, hashmarks told them which side the steering wheel was, so they didn't lose valuable time going to the wrong door!

I never really thought about these hash marks until this thread, and it's just my opinion two lines breaking up the flow do not look good,
So why would a person desire them?
I learned from, Zoomin that these marks were part of a c6 trim package, Okay so "That" c6 can have them...they came factory, put them on a non GS c6 and that is posing, like putting pace car decals on a non pace car 78.
No c3 came with them, from the research Kid Vette has done he didn't find a vette wearing the marks before '86,
So for people who like the hash marks is this to try to make people think your car has some pseudo racing track heritage? perhaps make it look like it's higher performance than the next one of the same make and model as yours? engine hop ups or better tires would do that and be a real mod...
I just do not get it,
But feel free to find my 69 build thread and poke fun at the mods I like...

Really? They can't remember which side the steering wheel is on but they can remember to look for the hash marks? Can you post a pic of the hash marks you are referring to?

I have the hash marks on my car and not because I'm trying to pass it off as something it's not but because I liked the look. I was having a few beers in the shop one day and thought I'd paint some hash marks on the car to see how they'd look. I didn't think I'd like them but after it was done they grew on me and I kept them. It's just a matter of taste.

The origin of hash marks just verified-

Fred originally used rope to repair a split in his frame....

After repairing it- decided it looked cool and painted it to replicate the rope-
