Haters gonna hate! I always get annoyed at people, mostly women, who always comment about my Vette as a "Mid-Life Crises" toy. Little do they know that I've owned Vettes since I was 24 yrs old, traveled around the world hundreds of times, fought in numerous wars and broke the sound barrier before I was 23 yrs old.......yea, I have a mid-life crises! It's usually a comment from people who wish they had a Vette or wish their wive's would let them have one!
As they skulk away in their mini-van or Camry...with their neutered Husband...now that's funny!

It's usually the people who can't afford them or aren't allows to buy them that make comments.
My usual response is, and not nearly as cleaver as yours is:
"Your right, it's about mid way through life that you appreciate what you have and how to enjoy it. Guess it takes some people longer"

I'm convinced jealousy does play a huge part.
At 59, I get those kind of comments..but I also got snide remarks with my first Corvette when I was 26..go figure.
Corvettes just seem to be a car, that non-Corvette people feel the need to associate negatively to.
Admittedly some of this negativity has been brought on by Corvette owners themselves..you know the ones, who come off as snobbish/superior for unknown reasons.
Some people get it..some people don't, and never will.
All you can do is consider the source, and laugh about it.

Geez, I wonder what people think when they see me and my girlfriend in my C7. I'm 68 and she's 40. Just for the record, she didn't know I had a Vette when I asked her out and she still accepted. She hasn't been in either of the C3's but I might take the '76 tonight.

Mid-life crisis, MY A$$. I had two Corvettes before I divorced my first wife and married my second. 35 years later I still have my second wife and my second Corvette. IT WAS A MID-LIFE CORRECTION.

Little do they know how much time, effort, money and sacrifice it took to have my Corvette.

Hum...I am 50 owned vettes since 16-17 never married until 9 years ago but Tina my wife loves the vette, found it and made it happen, her daughter is grown but we are good with her, my hair...well it's to my butt...when it figures out how long it should be it will stop growing.
But mid lifers?!?!?!?! I thought they bought C5's or a red or yellow Porsche????
What I feel badly about is people like my wifes ex, the cat is older than me, he had the $$$ and went every Sunday to "look" at vettes but would not buy one just because...

To me, the Vette is just another car. A SPECIAL one, to be sure, but I don`t think it makes me special because I have one. Like Bats, my wife was the "driving force" that found, and convinced me to buy, our 71 coupe.
I agree that jealousy is a big part of it. It brings to mind the line from an old Bob Seger song..
"You hit the street, you feel `em staring.....
You know they hate you, you can feel their eyes a glaring....
Because you`re different, because you`re free.....
Because you`re everything deep down they wish they could be!"
I usually ignore the haters, and smile as I silently walk away, thinking they should see my garage....
