Default How 20 minutes saved me $1700....my '72 build

I know the title to this thread is a little strange....So here is the rest of the story....I was 20 minutes late calling about a 72 last weekend....See link below for that part of the story.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...0-minutes.html

I figured the guy that bought it last week was just going to flip and sure enough it showed back up on CL for sale....So I call the guy just really wanting to see what I missed because he had it listed for 19,500....I knew he bought it for 15,000 or less...Turns out he bought it for way less....My guess is around 12,000....He prices it to me for 13,300....It needs work but for that price I couldn't turn it down....Only mechanical problem with it is when taking it out of gear if the rmp's are not just right I hear and feel a clunk....Kind of like a universal joint going out or something....The more I drove it the better I got at handling the clutch and gears and it just about goes away....I know I can get my truck to do the same just not as loud or as hard of a clunk if I don't clutch it just right....I do know the other 4 speed I drove was kind of like this as well....(I only drove the other car a mile or two) The rear end may be going out or the drive shafts not really sure but I will figure it out....Maybe it's just a old vette thing....?

It needs paint but that will come in a year or two...Not in a hurry I'm happy with it now.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Brian

Richard...I started to call you today but I realized if I wanted this car I could not wait....I heard the guy take 4 different calls on this car during the 4 hours it took to complete the deal.

To answer your question....In person...4 (not including the Vette show)....Online too many to count including additional pics and talking too many---many folks about their steel bumper Corvettes....I didn't buy the nicest one I saw BUT this one has a title and doesn't have a rusted out frame. I know you do some side work on these babies and I'm sure at some point I will be calling on you if that is OK...?

This car has some issues but I think the guts are solid.

Awesome! Your thread title sounds kind of like a Geico Commercial!

Well after reading thru quite a few threads about a "clunk" sound coming from the rear during shifts I'm hoping I just need a new snubber bushing....? The guy I bought it from had a lift so I got to take a good look at the underside before I bought it but I have not been back under it to look once I got it home....I spent the better part of the day getting it home and cleaning out the side of the garage that had been used as a race shop for our karts. Here it is in its new home.

Thank you.....The pics look better than the car does in person, but I'm happy with the way it looks. At some time it took a hit to the nose and wasn't repaired all that great....The hood doesn't line up well with the drivers side fender....It did come with another GM hood. The headlights don't line up to well but they do open and close with no issues. The wiper door opens but seems to hang on something and the wipers don't work. It has new actuators.

It's funny I really wasn't looking for a project car but looks like I got one anyway. I will be picking up the title from the original guy that had it for sale on Saturday....He also has the AIM and GM repair manual he is going to give me, another set of floor mats and the original center caps as well as a few other items and receipts on the work he has already done....The guy that just flipped it didn't care about any of the extra stuff besides the hood.

I need the halo trim on both sides in black...found some used ones on eBay for around $50.

I need to start a build thread and will soon with more pics and my plan.

I'm confused how much did the flipper who beat you to it make profit on this deal?

He told me $300 but I don't believe that. I figure he got it for around 12,000.... That would put him making $1300....The guy I bought it from said he didn't even drive it.... He just loaded it on his rollback..... So he wouldn't have known it had the clunk in the rear.....I did get a chance to crawl under it look at the snubber bushing and either the bolt is loose or the bushing is bad because I could just about stick my pinky between the frame and bushing.... I hope when I fix that the clunk will go away.

I was curious...so many cats on here trash and low ball a car like yours if it's posted for opinions, but I think it reflects what is really being bought and sold and the prices paid....

They can trash and lowball it all they want....Even snub me at our local shows....Won't bother me one bit....I'm happy with it and that is all that really matters....I will say this, I have had some really well known members here on the board go out of their way to help me in my search and I owe them all a big THANK YOU.

Like the title to this thread says, I saved $1700 because I would have paid full asking price last weekend even with the "clunk" in the rear end....Is it a $15,000 car...? Nope.... 12,000 is probably closer to it's value, but a steel bumper, 4 speed vette with AC is hard to come by here in the southeast and this car has spent it's whole life in Georgia.

Here are 4 more pics I took today so I can get Hagerty insurance tomorrow.

Wee,
I hope I didn't muck up what I was trying to say,
I believe your got a sweet deal on a very nice car I believe the price paid and the car match each other very well,

My other comment was in annoyance of how almost any car that gets posted on here in a "what do you think" type thread gets negative comments and low ball figures tossed at it, almost every project that is posted on here is called "junk" and even "worthless" by some.

I hope some wet blanket negative types take a look at your car and the price it was had for and see this is the real world.

Not at all Bats...I understand where you are coming from...I would have loved to have gotten a frame off perfect example of a 70-72 steel bumper but it just wasn't in my pocket book at this time....Who knows maybe I'll work on this one for a year or two and sell it and buy a numbers matching nicer one...? Prolly not but who knows.

On a side note...The alarm is supposed to work on this car....I know the key slot in the back has something to do with setting it but I have no idea how it works.....Can anyone point me to a thread about this issue....?

If numbers matching is your thing I sure do support that but I just bet the car you have will yield you a lot of fun....
