Default Put Her On The Road Today! Big Time "Clunking" When Backing Up

So I finally drove it after 4 weeks of looking at it! (1979) Licensed, registered and insured! Runs nice, a few rattles here and there...And this: A nasty Clink Clunk Clink Clunk (A binding feeling/sound of sorts) when backing slowly in reverse! I know there is numerous universal joints under these cars. Seams worse when the wheel is turned. I am praying it's not something in the differential. Once in gear and running up the road it's quiet and seams fine, but makes a racket in reverse. Off to work, wont be able to look at it until tomorrow or Sat...Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

I hope that you are lucky as I was. My clunk turned out to be a brake pad pin that had come loose because someone had used an undersized hairpin clip to hold it in place instead of a cotter pin. The pin would rub on the inside of the wheel. It sounded like something was was really about to come apart. Pushed the pin back in and used the proper cotter pin.

That would be nice Lacajun! But this sounds more like something in one of the half-shafts. I guess I will know more tomorrow when I get a chance to look things over...

I had a clunk when shifting....(72 4 speed) it turned out to be a wore out snubber bushing. This sound was just one clunk on every shift....Not a constant clunk-clunk-clunk. Good luck.

Thanks Brian. I decided to take it to my dad's mechanic....and a heck of a mechanic at that. I have owned the car for a month and it has yet to be on lift. I think every used C3 should go on a lift at some point. I can only see so much spying under the car in my driveway....Even jacked/blocked

I agree. This is the first thing I would look at. Anytime there is a torque variation (shifting, braking, accelerating etc), you will hear a clunk if this bushing is worn out.

Thanks guys! I love this site....Where is the snubber bushing mentioned above? The car needs bushings throughout. I sprayed the body mount bushing with Thrust to try softening them up a little before they get changed out.

This should give you a idea about the snubber bushing location....

Suggest you have a positraction ( limited slip ) problem. Gm has an superslick additive "whale oil" that may correct the problem

Assasin........you did what I normally do.......reply to a year old thread.

I've learned to check dates on threads before I reply.......especially when I do a Forum search----it can pull up some really old threads.

That cured the clunk in my 78. Noise from limited slip differential. It wasn't slipping smoothly. Worse when turning slowly.

It would be nice if the person who posts a problem, would bother to post the solution. Nice people take their time to post a possible fix and nothing from the op on what was discovered. Might be useful information to someone else.
