Default What's a fair price for a 72 LT1 Convertible

Im helping out a friend's widow to price his car since he passed away two months ago and she wants to sell his 72 LT1 Bryer Blue convertible. I went over the car with three friends last Saturday. Here's what we did. The car hasn't run since 1995. After 5 hours of draining gas, Marvel mystery oil in each cylinder, carb cleaner through fuel pump to rinse gunk, cleaner through carb fuel lines and carb, we used a small lawnmower gas tank to the fuel pump inlet and with a new battery got it started. Sounds and runs good but needs Holly carb rebuilt since accelerator pump wouldn't function.
Here's what I now know. 1972 LT1, trim and color correct. We believe one repaint (nice 5 footer), number matching date correct engine block, carb, trans, differential, alternator. Good solid frame with surface rust. Car has 50k on odometer but speedo cable is disconnected at trans. Options include: power brakes,255hp engine, radio (MIA), tilt/telescoping column.
Gas tank is rusty inside and would need replaced, unsure of brake repairs needed but master cylinder was empty and pedal goes to floor, the top vinyl is nice but rear window is missing from it. Can't locate hubcaps yet. Rivet bumps slightly showing in front end. 1/2 inch crack at lower left headlight corner. Chrome is good shape.
I'm unfamiliar with C3 LT1 prices. What would a fair price be for this car? I'll try to post some pics later since they're all on one of the other guy's camera.

Hagerty seems pretty close to real world pricing to me. They list a #3 car (good overall condition) at $32,500. You could baseline there and then deduct for needed repairs.

My take would be in the $20K-$25K range. But valuing cars over the internet is notoriously hazy.

No kidding. Zillow claims to do it with real estate, using only public records and no inspections. Garbage in...garbage out. Yet they are making a fortune by doing it and putting licensed, experienced real estate appraisers out of business.

Whatever you do be careful not to scape dirt away from the engine stamp pad area. Use something gentle on it to clean away dirt for any pictures. If it has paint on it use lacquer thinner or something like that and wipe it off with a cloth.
I can't count how many engine pads I have seen lately that are all scaped up from cars that have been sitting and been "cleaned with a screwdriver" to get gunk off.

Will do, thanks. We only wiped with a rag so far. Dave

A '72 LT-1 Corvette convertible just went across the Mecum Denver auction at 36k with no sale. It was in restored condition.

Curious why some of these LT-1's are getting such low bids at auction.A real nice 70 Blue LT-1 just sold on the for sale section,it had a 42k asking price.

70 vert is rarer than a 72 vert. 36k is not exactly a low bid for the 72 especially since the 70 was only asking 6k more and that blue one was for sale since May. And we don't know what the final selling price for the 70 actually was. If it was 40k then the margin is only 4k from the auction bid.
36k is fair for a 72.

36k is a very low bid for a fully restored 72 LT-1 vert.

Would you consider the 70 vert that just sold on here for around 40k restored? (Early Shark desribed the 72 car as restored, not fully restored if there is a difference) If so, then the 70 was only 4-6k more and is considerably rarer, so I think 36k is fair and apparently the bidders agreed with me but the seller didnt. (Also assuming the 72 did not have ac which changes everything)

On the lower side maybe, but very low? I would not agree. market is still pretty soft.

I have no doubt the prices will start rising in the near future.

I agree the prices are soft. The 70 that just sold on the forum, even at 40k the buyer got a great deal.

Based on recent experience, AC coupes #2 condition cars, high 40's low 50's. AC verts, one sold a few months ago for 80K. Non-AC 72 coupes in the mid to upper 30's, verts mid to high 50's.

70-71 LT-1's can command even more...
