Default 1969 Corvette L88 Is One Amazing Dream Car

Imagine being the lucky stiff driving home from auction with this 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray L88, one of only 216 models produced.

Back in the day, I knew a guy in NJ that owned a red L/88 coupe. He campaigned the car on the show circuit. I remember at one show, a number of folks waited till the end of the show to hear him start it up. It certainly sounded mean.

The L88 had an advertised horsepower of 430 not 435. The 435 horsepower car was the triple 2 barrel solid lifter street engine. This was done to keep rpo L88 below the radar, it was strictly a race engine. No A/C no radio no heat.

I knew of someone who had a '68 or '69 back in the mid 70s and sold it to buy a new '75 with A/C because while the L88 was real fast it was a bear on the street and a "sweat box" in the summer.
What do the say about hindsight and foresight?

I saw a YT video of a L-88 dyno run delivering 557 hp/492.5 tq which supports what I have read over the years.

I blows my mind that one of the baddest engines ever to hit the street is easily eclipsed by the LT4 with 650 hp - and these are net hp numbers.

We are truly living in the golden age of performance.

When I was growing up in the '70s, I thought those days were gone forever.

Its all about the very steep inlet port angles and the computer controlled fuel systems.

68-9 L88's did have heaters and defrosters. The 67's did not.

No doubt. My 14 SS Camaro has 426 hp. My 72 corvette, somewhere around 430 at the crank. (in theory, no dyno numbers)
The difference is one sounds all gnarly, loud, and sucks gas. You figure it out. Lol.
