72 Road Race Replica Ideas Sought
#41
Melting Slicks
Racers etc. used the Vitaloni type mirrors many different models they offered, one of the popular being the Sebring. The Porsche crowd has caused originals to be driven up to high prices, but some of these have been copied and some modern reproductions are starting to surface. The brackets to the car that mount these, I usually see are custom fabricated and not store bought mounts.

I know I am taking a slight detour on the road race replica but I have a marriage to protect so I am adding these burn shields to my side pipes to protect my lovely wife's legs when she exits the car. She burned her leg on my 1977 back in 2010, put protectors on that and no more burns.
These will mount over my Hooker Side Pipes which are being ceramic coated matte black as we speak.
Sometimes we do things for others to protect them, and us. This is one of those times. I sure hope she likes the five point racing harness and race seats...

If you have not seen the postings here on the forum about the use of 3D printing for making Corvette parts you may want to check that out. One example is a custom base being fabricated to hold mirrors on corvettes at a better angle for viewing. Nicely done and innovative.

I love this thread, my car is in that same build vein but with a few custom touches,
I have a few questions I hope are keeping in with the thread,
I wanna run 10" x 15" rear wheels and 295 50 15 tires if they do not stick out far enough for my L-88 flare I will use adaptors,
So with front flares what is the common wheel and tire sizes used on many of the cool cars posted in this thread?
back in the day did more of the cars have PS or MS ?

Great questions Bats. I am running 295/50R15's on all four wheels. I have huge front flairs that I hoping will be plenty enough for the larger tires. Mickey Thompson old school type tires for this one. I am a ways away from assembly but have accumulated a lot of the parts, won't be too long before we can start posting pictures.
Lets see what the other guys say...
Thanks for asking.

The last two comments made me smile, big big smile,
My 66 was modded somewhat in the vein of a grand sport, it had 8" rims all 4 and the tires all 4 were very wide but I cant recall what size...
But I liked that all 4 the same look.
So with my 69 I am not as concerned with the flare covering the tire but I am concerned that a 15x10 with 295 50 15 will not rub when turning, I mean rub chassis and or suspension not fiberglass....what do you cats think?

On the back some guys are using as much as 5 1/2" backspacing, but depending on wheel diameter you may need offset TAs, eliminate sway bar or shorten the spring. Here again you can use as wide a wheel as you want as long as you use correct backspacing.

On the front I think you're limited to 4" backspacing if you don't want to rub chassis or suspension. Wheels can be as wide as you want as long as you use the right backspacing.

Kid, you have me fascinated now. I have seen rubbing on the back of the tire on my rear trailing arms when using 15 X 7 wheels on rolling chassis to move them around. Is that a back spacing issue and where can I go to learn more about this geometry and how to deal with it correctly? You may have uncovered a mystery for me and I want to understand it better, but have to admit I do not fully understand it now.
Thanks for your help and best regards,
David

Gordon came over today and helped walk me through sealing up the 496 BB Stoker engine today, it was a fun time and he handled the details and I learned a lot.
Here is Gordon doing what he does best, working on the engines and teaching me what I need to know.
Fortunately I had all the parts today and all the correct parts to get the job done so the engine is full of oil, primed throughout, plugs are in, dizzy is in, water pump is on, and next up will fitting the transmission to the engine, but well down the road. Need to build that rolling chassis first, which won't be too long from now the way I am cutting through the 72 coupe.
And here is the progress today.
Anyway, my thanks to Gordon for helping me with this and thanks to you all for watching.

I put 8.5 wide American 200S on the front of my 70 Race car build. I think they have 3.5 back space. I wanted to check the fit before I pulled the frame out from under it. I am using Hoosier race tires I think they are 26.5 tall. They fit nicely and look mean !

Frame for the racer is staged and waiting for its turn in the garage. It will be built right after I get this one finished and out of the way.
AND sitting in the wings as well is this 1969 chassis which I may dig into at the same time.
I love staying busy and productive, that is for sure.

72 Racer automatic frame and all assembly components will be moved from storage to my garage before Thanksgiving and the build of the car will begin.
Frame is ready for assembly.
All brake components are ready for installation.
All front steering components are ready for installation.
Rack attack rack and pinion steering is ready for installation.
VBP slalom and track suspension ready for installation.
496 Stroker BB is ready for installation, not ready to run yet.
Hooker Super Comp Headers and side pipes ceramic coated now and ready for installation and break-in. (Burn guards being PC this week).
TKO600 five speed is ready for mating to the 496 stroker motor.
Newly restored Hurricane 10" X 15 wheels are ready to receive 295/50-R15 Mickey Thompson Tires. (This week).
Newly rebuilt rear trailing arms are ready for installation.
Newly rebuilt 3.70 rear differential is ready for installation.
New EFI ready gas tank, fuel pump, sending unit purchased.
And many more items are now here and staged for this build, far too many to mention here but you will see them in the next few weeks.
I believe I even have the color scheme worked out now but that will be another post for another time.
This build will be well documented and your comments will always be welcomed. It took me three weeks to build the 72 coupe chassis so I anticipate it will take me about the same length of time to build this chassis not including all the Holiday fun we are planning this year.
So thanks for watching and have a great Sunday.

New Wheels and Tires
I had the 295/15-15 Mickey Thompson's mounted to the Hurricane 10" wheels yesterday and they came out great.
I haven't put the center caps on them yet nor have I removed the blue protective coating over the white raised letters but you can get a pretty good idea what they will look like from this picture taken this morning.
I measured the wheels prior to mounting the tires and the offset of these is 4", which I understand should work great, so I am pretty encouraged. I will size them to the rolling chassis when I get the front and rear installed...which won't be too long from now.
GOAL: Rolling chassis by Christmas...wish me luck.
