Default Manifold sealant

I pulled the air pump off my 1974 - 454 today. I then saw what looks like liquid gasket material in front of manifold. I looked in the back and found the same thing. Could that be from the factory? I do not know the history of the car so I am trying to put the story together as I go. Thanks John.

Its RTV. What we found to work better (if properly applied) than the rubber or cork from years ago. Not original.

Another clue is to see if your intake is original....

I don't know what year it started but GM used red RTV from the factory on the china wall seals and the valve covers. at least in '79 and probably earlier. but that does not look factory (it generally was a single long squeeze out, not rippled). betting in the last 40 plus years it's probably been off for one reason or another...
