New 70-72 ls5 owners thread
#251
:iagree, I hate to see this thread die out, as I really enjoy it. I need to take some new pictures of my car, I guess, maybe that will motivate others to do the same. Even some LS-5 chit chat would be fun.
I have question to start some conversation, what is difference between the '72 LS-5 and the '73 LS-4 engines? From what I can tell nothing, so why did they change the engine code to LS-4 in '73?

Hopefully I will get to work on mine later this week or even the weekend. The wife got laid off Friday so cant really buy new parts, but I think that I have most of what I need.
Car has been sitting for over 20 years. Previous owner spun a bearing, crank got bent but no other damage. He replaced the crank and did the necessary machine work, put it together and it sat After he lost interest. We reached an agreement and the car is mine. When I got the car the AC box was MIA, so bought parts off eBay that were pre '73. I had all the other lines and parts. Got that installed in late summer or erarly fall. The engine was installed just prior to Christmas. I need to put cotter pins in the front suspension, mount starter, hang new exhaust, put radiator/condenser/insulation/fan shroud in. Not really all that much left, but it's just me working on it and have nothing to compare things to and wasn't the one that took it part.

Who ever designed the big block with AC radiator and shroud is one cruel SOB. Good thing the assembly manual does not say who it was.
Ended up having to take bolts out of core support to move it forward enough. Now need to put the alternator back on, since I took it off thinking it would give more clearance. Have to put bolts back in the side supports and attach radiator brackets. Also need to snake the fan in to mount it to water pump (which will be first).
Tank is installed after removing it and replacing fuel lines. Need to mount rear portion of exhaust and decide on mufflers before it's first firing in over 20 years.
