Hate to ask, but what's a fair offer?
I don't know much about C3 prices other than what I see on the Forum or elsewhere at retail. I'd like to impose on you for your opinions on price for this car.
The 72 red convertible belonged to my now deceased brother and is owned by his widow. I'd like to make a fair offer to her for the car which I think
she would like to sell. They owned it since 1976.
It's completely original with the low horse engine, 4 speed, 80k miles, white worn conv. top, nice original tan interior and slightly faded carpet, aux. hardtop, all original paint in excellent condition, stainless sleeved calipers.
Power steering and brakes. No AC. Perfect frame still with all original paint on it. Chrome is nice for the age. All gauges, speedo, tach, vacuum lights work as they should.
Water pump/ radiator was replaced as were shocks.
The bonding strips on the rear and front fenders can be seen under the paint and the front rivets are visible as slight bumps.
Any advice as to a fair value would be appreciated. Dave

Ask her if she wants to sell it. If so ask her if she has any idea what she would like to sell it for and tell her you would like to buy it as a remembrance of your brother. Don't let her sell it for less than it is worth either, as she will find out and possibly be bitter with you. You could also get it appraised.

Hi dkl,
While you certainly have given some description of this car it would just be a GUESS to give you a dollar figure at this point.
A few pictures would help folks give you a range for the value of the car that you can approach your sister in-law with.
Even just a couple of pictures of the exterior, interior, engine compartment, and one looking under the front and one looking under the rear would be of help.
An unmolested 72 convertible is a desirable car so if it's quite nice it has value.
Since you mention that the car still has it's original paint some people will be interested in knowing how much of the rest of the car is as it was when it left St.Louis. The pictures will help answer that question.
Pictures!
Regards,
Alan

If description accurate that car has a lot going for it
*Completely original including paint
*Original Red car
*Mint frame (what about bird cage?)
*Everything functional
*Known history back to at least 1976
Negatives:
Needs carpet kit
Needs top
Chrome good, but not great
I'd think $25k-$27k.

Sorry for the loss of your brother.
I'd accept whatever reasonable price your sister in law asks (after you clue her in on values of these cars).
You are getting ideas here, but they seem high to me for a car that needs body prep, paint, carpets, new top, etc.
Search sold listings on E-Bay for chrome bumper C3 convertibles.

Sympathy to you and your family concerning your brother....
(I won't make a rookie guess on the car value).

Suggest to your sister-in-law that she have the car appraised. Do you have nieces or nephews who may have an interest in their father's car?

My deepest condolences on the loss of your brother.
Mine is not an expert opinion by a long shot, but I've been watching prices on these cars for the better part of a year, and I'd have to agree with the 20K price. At 19k-20k in the midwest, the car might get sold after a month or three on the market, 25k+ will sit for a long time.
There is also a lot of value to her in not having to list the car to the public, and not having the aggravation and possible safety risk of dealing with potential buyers and the occasional scammer. Plus, the car stays in the family.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and helpful input. My brother's two grown children have no interest in the car and I have so many fond memories of our trips and events done together with our cars that I would hate to have it leave the family. I really miss him.
I've had friends tell me that my offer should include discounting for a repaint and redo of bonding strips and rivets. They put the price around 16k -17K discounting 10k for paint and incidentals. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't repaint. The bonding strips are only seen if you specifically look for them. The paint is nice all over and not cracked or chipped. I like the originality. I do understand Tokim and Oldgto's point of needing a repaint to address the bonding strip/rivet in the price and that this doesn't equate with it having "excellent paint". This is also what my Corvette friends are telling me. (He always had some funky terry towel seat covering over his seats as you might see. I always made him pay for that injustice!)
I don't have many pictures right now since it's now stored for winter. Probably best that I repost this after I get it out and can take more pics. For now, here's one I took at his funeral procession when I drove his car and some Corvette friends followed.

Hey dkleather, sorry to hear about your brother. My 68 non original engine appraised for 23k. 25k to 27k sounds fair.
