After 30 years of have a exhaust system were I couldn't but the spare tire carrier back . I now have a new system but cant get the lock open ,the lock looks almost like new but the key doesn't do anything other then go in . any idea on how to open it and save it ?
After 30 years, are you sure you're using the right key?
You may want to check with a local locksmith (preferably an old one), to see if they can open it up for you.
You could also try Pat Krouse, of Pat's Locks in MD. Pat use to reproduce all of the locks and lock sets, including spare tire locks, for the Corvette vendor. He retired and sold off his repro lock business, but I think he still does some lock repairs and similar work. 410-879-9647
If you can't get the lock open then you have to remove the bolt that the lock attaches to. It's easy. I think its two bolts that hold the lock bolt to the back of the frame. Then if you don't have the correct key send it to Pat like GB said and he will fix it.
Great guy, I've dealt with him.

Got it was pretty easy . Took a string threaded it through the hole in the side . Kept turning the shaft until it built up enough thread on the shaft . It pushed the lock pin in and the shaft popped out .
Once I removed my lock I never bothered to put it back on. I just don't see anyone really wanting to stealing the spare out of a 46 year old car. Anyone going to that much work would probably find stealing the entire car to be more profitable. That and the car is always garaged and seldom out of my sight when it is allowed to roam free.

" I just don't see anyone really wanting to stealing the spare out of a 46 year old car." I had the same thought, so I left the lock off my 68 convert. I have break-down insurance on the car, so I probably will never use the spare anyway, especially since I have the stock 7 inch rim on the spare and 20 x 10 inch rims on the back wheels. I don't think the 20 inch rim will come close to fitting in the spare tire tub.
