Default VIN Verification

Hi all, I'm trying to verify that I have decoded the VIN of the 1979 C3 that I got my hands on correctly.

The VIN is: 1Z8749S42xxxx.

From what I have found, it makes it a:
1=Chevrolet
Z=Corvette
87=2-Door Coupe
4=L82
9=1979
S=St. Louis

Also from what I can find its a 42xxxx sequence so I guess that would make it about half way through the run for the 79 model.

Is this correct?

Also, is there a resource that I go to that will give me all the details about what the car had as original options for colors etc.

Where would I look on the engine block to see if has the original block. I believe it has been re-worked at least since it has a Holley carb and Edelbrock intake with Edelbrock valve covers.

To see original options you would need build sheet or tank sticker if it is still on top of gas tank
Engine ID will be stamped on right front of block just in front of head as in this picture .Trim tag on drivers side door post will have color info

Try www.corvsport.com for data on options and color codes.

All 79 VINs have the 4 following the S. A total of 53807 79s were assembled. Subtract your consecutive unit number (2xxxx) from 53087 and you can determine where your car stood in overall production.

The time built code is in the upper right corner of the trim tag confirming the month and day the trim tag was attached.

The pic shown is not from a 79 block. Pad is more square looking. Post the 2 sets of numbers on the pad as shown and at least you can determine what the block was originally. Can't tell what was done to it though.

You can purchase a copy of the invoice for your 79 here. Cost $50
