Three rear compartment questions
Refurbishing my rear compartment that has been just sitting on top of the carpet since I got the car. Pissed me off the other day so now I'm going to fix it up but have a few questions:
1) Which compartment does the lock go on?
2) Is there a bracket for the courtesy light in the middle?
3) Which harness is the connector for the courtesy light on?
Since my son is in college, I now know to ask a bonus question
Do people generally put insulation on the bulkhead under the carpet and how is the back flap of the carpet attached? Upholstery adhesive?

On my 72 the lock is supposed to go on the jack compartment but I put it on the center where I keep my reg and insurance and stuff like that
My curt light just clips into the frame, no separate bracket. I'll find a pic
Again I'll find a pic but I think it's orange and black

Oh, I did install sound deadener but no additional insulation other than some strips to flatten out the surface. The flap that rolls over the bulkhead gets held down between the bulkhead under rear compartment frame. I used some black duct-tape to hold it in place until the frame was installed, might have picked that up form Alan
If you add to much padding on the bulkhead it causes problems fitting the quarter trim and e-brake console and can look puffy

The lock originally went on the jack compartment on my 73.
I did use insulation in the back of my coupe to help keep it cool
with the air conditioner here in hot Louisiana.
The rear carpet is held in place by 3 plugs at the top back. (if this is the area you are asking about)
You can see two of them here. I didn't use any adhesive on the carpet as Mooser suggested.

LOL
I though he meant the carpet on the wall right behind the seats
For the rear wall, I also insulated it (and sound deadener) and Donnie is correct with the three plugs.

Hi c,
On my 71 the rear compartment floor and rear bulkhead carpet had strips of underlayment loosely glued (spay glue) to the underside of the carpet.
On the vertical bulkhead the carpet itself was held in place by the 3 rubber plugs.
(On my 71 there was just a small piece of underlayment under the carpet on the seat bulkhead…. at it's top where it tucks under the 3 compartment door frame. It was VERY loosely glued to the bulkhead.)
Regards,
Alan

Interesting
So what year did they change the lock from the jack to the center compartment? 71 or 72?

Hi M,
I believe 68-71 cars all had the lock on the center compartment lid. During the 72 model year the lock was moved to the right side compartment lid.
There is some thought that the change occurred at ABOUT sequence # 8500 (early December). This happens to be BEFORE the change in the AIM is indicated, 1-12-72. This isn't typical, but possible.
Regards,
Alan

Same on my '71.
On page 3 in the owners manual it states: "Be sure to lock the glove box compartment and remove the key from the car whenever it is necessary to leave the ignition key with an attendant."
On page 5, it shows the center compartment as the glove box.

So for the 73+ did it stay over on the jack compartment or move back again?
I know we're kind of side-tracked but I think CA-Legal-Vette is a 73? so kind of still on track

I have to say that I'm once again amazed how a simple question gets so complicated. Never occurred to me that the lock position changed over time.
The carpet being tucked under the front edge makes sense but I'm still not clear how it's held in place.

As Alan says, there was a small amount of glue on the face of the bulkhead (towards the seats) mainly towards the top. On mine there was about two lines dribbled across the bulked about 4" and then 10" down. When I installed, there was sound deadener and some felt spacers so I lightle sprayed 3M adhesive over the top foot or so
The part that goes over the top has the padding. I put some 3M WindowWeld strips tight into the corner between the bulkhead and rear deck (but I really don't think they were needed) and then taped the edge to the compartment hole edge (Thanks Alan I think)
The frame really fits tight in that area with the carpet and felt and tight corner it makes so it holds surprisingly well
The two corners out near the quarter trim get tucked into the fold along with the rear-side carpets, a lot of careful trimming and a round end steel rule helps
