Trim question -Where carpet meets self belt clasp
Putting my interior back together after a lot of work including recovering seats. I'm at stage now where I'm putting sill plate back on and have a question about what the proper method is to trim out where the seatbelt end sticks out against the sill plate. Using same carpet as was in there previously and they cut a flap out for the belt to stick through. However if I use that flap and tuck the rest of carpet into sill plate , do I just double back the carpet flap on top of belt back under the carpet ? Trying to understand how it's supposed to trim out where I don't see the unfinished undercarriage underneath the belt. Pics below

I do have those covers. i had to pull them out as part of replacing the seatbelts (part of the work i just finished). interestingly enough though - when i pulled the seats out - the plastic best over piece was *not* on top of the carpet as Paul's picture shows but rather under the carpet. This makes more sense to me as the plastic would "shield' the belt from the carpet. regardless - i do have the plastic cover and it does keep the belt end from being retracted back under the seat. i'm trying to understand how/if the carpet should look with respect to the belt end/clasp. if you look at my pics above if i pull up on the end of the belt you can see under the belt to the white paint of the cars body

Hi v,
I'm not at all familiar with the installation of the 74 lap belt retractor that's why I went to Paul's photo.
I CAN see though why the situation in your car presently bothers you.
You're not using the plastic 'covers' because?
Regards,
Alan
I remember that there was a 'gasket/ grommet used in that location during 68/69 (?).
It's hard to see the belt because most of it is tucked behind the seat.

should have been more clear. the plastic cover was re-installed under the carpet and this plastic cover is what's keeping the belt end from retracting back under the seat. that said the belt comes up from under the seat right next to the sill plate and i'm wondering if it's 'normal' for me to be able to see under the belt when i pull up on it.
i'm starting to suspect that maybe the previous owner cut the carpet flap too deep towards the seat which is letting the belt end show underneath itself too much.
the plastic grommet you showed in your pic i don't have on my car... i'm going to go take a peek over at Paragon to see if that's a part for a 74 or not

Hi v,
I'd think pulling the belt through the carpet without some sort of 'guide' will take it's toll on the carpet as time goes by.
As I indicated with the photo…. that grommet is a 68-69 part, I don't think it was seen in production after that.
Still not clear to me… why don't you put the plastic cover where it was intended?
Regards,
Alan

So I did quite a bit of searching of old threads here. Looks like there is debate whether the plastic retractor cover goes over (as shown in Paul74's pic) or under. Most prior answers said the cover goes under the carpet. Regardless, either way the real issue is that the cover opening for the belt leaves quite a bit of space between it and the frame of the car. I took pics of my drivers side where I have not yet out the seat back in to show. I also took another pic of the passenger side (which does have the seat installed and the plastic cover installed as well to show what I mean

Hi V,
If there's uncertainty as to whether the plastic cover is typically under or over the carpet and the slit in the carpet exposes the underbody in both cases I guess hearing from some 74 owners will help!

Agree Alan. I appreciate your willingness to at least bounce questions off of
I had thoughts of painting the body area that the underside of the belt exposes as a compromise but would love to hear (or better yet see pics ) from other 74 owners of how their belts/carpet look
