Mechanics Fender Cover Protector
Hello,
Kind of of a silly ? but has anybody found a cover that doesn't slide right off our fiberglass fenders?
I have some of the old school fender shami blankets and they keep
falling onto the ground.
I see magnetic ones advertised but that's not going to help a guy with a plastic car.
Anyone find one that stays where you put it?
Thank you,
Marshal

Hi m,
Are you ready…. I have 2 thick bathroom rugs that I use.
They're heavy, and I let them hang over into the engine compartment a little which helps them stay in place.
Regards,
Alan
Rule #1 Never hold 2 tools in you're hand at once… you WILL drop one.
Rule #2 Never change socket sizes on a socket wrench while bent over the car…. you WILL drop one.

I use old bath towels, easy to wash, soft non scratching. The auto parts store fender covers usually have a foam type underside that can get dirt, dust or general debris in-bedded in it, then scratch your fender, I wont use those type.
Use a couple of these clips to secure the bath towel to the inner fender lip under the hood, keeps the towel in place.

Ssnake Oyl makes a rubber cover called Fender Gripper, that they claim won't slide off the fender. They're available with logos for most car brands, and Snake Oyl use to sell them at all the major shows. Many of the Corvette vendors, carry the Fender Grippers.
I have some old heavy rubber fender covers, that somehow have survived 30-40 years. Instead of being flat, they have two seams sewed into them. When laid on a fender, the seams allow the top to lay flat on the fender, and the sides to lay flat against the outer fender and inner skirt. At each seam there's about a half inch tall bead, which keeps tools and parts from rolling off the cover.
These Craftsman covers are very similar to the old covers I have.

I agree 100%! I have been doing this for years without a problem - and easy to clean.

They have 2 seems about the width of the fender to keep tools and
such from rolling off.

I use moving blankets. I have several around the garage, and they`re big enough to cover the top, and sides of the whole fender, and drape over into the engine bay. Cheap... from Harbor Freight.

I got a cheap set at o O'Reilly auto parts. They are the generic kind all shops slap their name on. They work well enough to protect the top of the fender and keep tools in place, but a good wing will lift them and all your tools and screws/ bolts and throw eveything onto your block and under your car. I wasn't happy that day. Luckily I had a rag stuffed into the carb.
Rule#4 never leave an open carb uncovered, see example above.

This is exactly what I use with some nice soft towels.

The blue moving blanket from Harbor Freight. Possibly U-Haul has something similar but the blanket from Harbor Freight is really cheap. Cut an engine size hole less some flaps that fold down into the compartment and everything is secure. I got this tip from somebody here on this forum.

I have an inexpensive Snap On (yes, an oxymoron) fender cover that's essentially a sheet of anti slip foam rubber. Not great for resting tools but protects the fender well. Has saved me more than once, especially when I add brake fluid or oil.
Found it:

Guess I was right when I called it an oxymoron. I paid a LOT less than this for it.

FYI--
With ALL of the items that might be used as 'fender protectors', there are TWO primary directives to follow:
1. Make sure the fender is CLEAN before you put the protector on it;
2. NEVER place the down-side of the protector on ANYTHING but a clean fender. When you are done, fold the fender protector so the down-side is folded ONLY against itself so no dirt/grit can ever get to it.

Ssnake Oyl makes a rubber cover called Fender Gripper,
If they stay on the car to long they leave these little round oily marks in the paint. You have to use detailer to get them out. He told me if you use them with out a Cloth towel between the body and the cover I won't guarantee your paint work.
I use to wonder where those marks came from before the car was painted.... Now I know. The Product is made very well and I still use them...especially the surround cover. Great Product.
But Now I use Towels under them

Great tips and advise, glad I asked.
The clips and moving blanket idea is stellar.
Also the bathroom rugs Alan mentioned, never thought of it and they are designed to be slip proof.
Good info on the petroleum based covers leaving fish eyes in the paint.
And certainly a need to keep what ever cover I use clean especially on the paint side.
Thank you everyone.
