Default Spontaneous Wipers - 1980 Coupe w 87k miles

Once the engine is warmed up, my wipers come on automatically and won't shut off.

What could be the cause of this?

When "cold", the wiper control runs the wipers okay. So for the time being, I have the connector to the wiper motor assembly disconnected.

Presuming you have intermittent wipers, the control module in the center console ahead of the shifter is suspect. With the schematics in the factory service manual and a multimeter you can pin down the problem as the controller is not cheap. A failed controller often causes the wipers to run continuously.

Mike is right, the controller can be the issue in most of the cases. You can bypass the controller to see if that is the issue. I have a picture to show how..

However, starting in 1980 the controller was moved from the center console (1978-1979) to behind the passenger side seat in the rear storage compartment.

This picture shows you how to jumper the controller so the wipers will work normally. If you do this and they work you need a controller... if they still have the same issue then you need to go digging deeper. If you don't want to jumper them I have a connector that will do this for you. https://willcoxcorvette.com/corvette...-harness-80-82

This looks like a good place to start....and I am wondering still why at first when I drive, there is no "self startup" of the wipers, but in time...say driving 10 to 20 miles or so, THEN the wipers come on. Does heat build up or what is it that causes the malfunction to be delayed?

You might check the connections and terminals first, they may be corroded and causing this issue. Corrosion will cause the issue you describe.
